It is taken by all Stage 1 Biology, Zoology and Marine students (~240) and semester 1 is based around the\u00a0SDGs.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"1\">We\u00a0introduce\u00a0students to\u00a0SDGs and why they are important. We provide them with a\u00a0resource pack\u00a0for each chosen goal and target that includes\u00a0UN\u00a0materials and scientific literature relating to each target \u2013 we use these in the taught sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The semester 1 materials are delivered as a series of academic skills activities\u00a0using non-synchronous online (NSO)\u00a0materials,\u00a0workshops\u00a0and tutorials.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"3\"><strong>Workshops\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have a core teaching team that develop the materials and deliver the workshops that are focused on academic skills and semester 1 is literacy and scientific writing.\u00a0During the workshops, students undertake tasks to practice the theory delivered in the NSO materials and develop their skills.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"3\"><strong>Tutorials\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After each workshop,\u00a0students are\u00a0given\u00a0a\u00a0tutorial\u00a0task to work on and take along to their\u00a0tutorial\u00a0the following week. The tutorials are either delivered by their personal tutor or the core teaching team. For the group poster and presentation, they should work with peers in their tutor group who are working on a different goal or target and discuss how achieving one goal\/target may influence our ability to achieve others.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Why did you do it?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p aria-level=\"2\">We want our students to be global citizens and recognise where the biosciences fit within current ecological, economical and\u00a0societal\u00a0issues, and how they\u00a0have a role to play\u00a0in\u00a0finding solutions.\u00a0MST1204 was delivered for the first time in 2019-2020 and previous iterations of the module allowed students to select their own topic to focus on for the assessment.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\">We wanted to retain that element of\u00a0choice, but\u00a0utilise the SDGs as a platform to develop their global awareness and essential\u00a0graduate\u00a0attributes. The timing of this\u00a0module\u00a0to coincide with\u00a0the UN Decade of\u00a0Ocean Science for Sustainable Development\u00a0has allowed our students to\u00a0further\u00a0identify the\u00a0importance of sustainable use and development of our natural resources.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 aria-level=\"2\"><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW136314573 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136314573 BCX0\">Does it work?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW136314573 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">Embedding the development of academic skills and graduate attributes\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">within our programmes with clear links to the discipline-specific content better engages our students with these activities.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">Students have commented that the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW230672956 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">module is effective in teaching\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW230672956 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">techniques\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">that they<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW230672956 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">\u00a0can utilise throughout\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">their degree programmes and the approach gives them solid grounding for scientific writin<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">g as it is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">\u00a0designed in a way that is relevant to the subject of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">degree programme<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230672956 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW230672956 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Student Voice\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p aria-level=\"1\">We\u00a0asked\u00a0students\u00a0about the best feature of the module\u00a0and were pleased to see some positive comments about SDGs:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p aria-level=\"1\">\u201cI enjoyed the topic of\u00a0SDG\u00a0targets.
