There was also the recognition that cultural competence should not be treated as a discrete topic, but embedded within curricula and supported as a developmental process across students’ academic and clinical journeys.

This work focused on pre-registration undergraduate and postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy cohorts, where cultural competence is a core professional outcome.

The Solution

CultuRACE is a longitudinal, curriculum-embedded programme framework for cultural competence education, developed and facilitated within pre-registration Speech and Language Therapy programmes. Rather than adding standalone content, it was designed to strengthen and connect existing learning across academic modules and clinical education. CultuRACE is not a new theory of cultural competence, but a practical pedagogical response to the persistent challenge of teaching it well.

The programme was designed and facilitated by Linda Jose, with iterative refinement informed by student feedback and curriculum review. Professor Helen Stringer championed the work and contributed to facilitation, while LTDS colleagues Matt Laidler and Emma McCulloch supported the refinement and delivery of the LEGO® Serious Play® session.

Informed by Campinha-Bacote’s (2002) process model of cultural competence, CultuRACE frames cultural competence as an ongoing, experiential process rather than a fixed or assessable endpoint.

CultuRACE comprises five thematically sequenced sessions:

Sessions 1–2: Culture, identity, unconscious bias, anti-racism, and allyship.

Sessions 3–4: Health inequalities, systemic racism, decolonising healthcare and professional responsibility using experiential approaches, including LEGO® Serious Play®.

Session 5: A bespoke CultuRACE digital board game integrating learning through scenario and discussion.

Across all sessions, experiential, playful, and dialogic pedagogies supported engagement with sensitive topics. Learner reflection, session feedback, and a self-designed cultural competence self-rating tool (undergoing validation) informed iterative development. In later sessions, reflections formed part of summative assessment of reflective practice (rather than cultural competence). With ethical approval and student consent, reflections were also used to support understanding of the impact the CultuRACE sessions had on students’ learning.

The impact (results)

Early implementation indicated positive learning impacts, with strong student engagement in complex and sensitive topics. These findings are informing ongoing refinement and validation of the cultural competence self-rating tool.

Embedding reflection within summative assessment helped position cultural competence learning as a core element of professional education.
