Obtaining Tissue for Use in Research

If you need tissue for use in a research project, there are three options available:

  • Use pre-existing material from a Biobank
  • Buy pre-existing material from a commercial supplier
  • Collect new tissue

Pre-existing Material

To use any of this stored material you will need Research Ethics Committee (REC) approval.

Collecting New Tissue

To collect tissue from NHS patients you must get ethical approval from a recognised NHS REC. Permission from a Local NHS is also required.

Newcastle University Biobanks

Newcastle University has many Biobanks across its premises.
