(2019, in print) “Using Values, Beliefs, and Norms to Predict Conserving Behaviors in Organizations”, European Management Review.

ABSTRACT

Studying environmental behaviors in organizations is important because of the recent concerning trends of climate change, the large contribution of organizations to environmental problems, and the keen interest in this topic by academics and practitioners.  The Values-Beliefs-Norms (VBN) framework has been utilized to examine environmental behavior, but it has not been always applied in its entirety and has received very limited attention within an organizational setting.  This paper examines the full model within a workplace context and extends it by investigating the effects of VBN variables on four conserving behaviors. This research sheds light on the extended model via a quantitative methodology (structural equation modeling), utilizing a sample of 714 U.K. employees functioning in an office environment across a range of industries.  We find direct and indirect effects among the VBN variables.  Personal norms strongly affect all four conserving behaviors studied, highlighting the relevance of norming interventions in organizations.
