NINE DTP PhD Studentship Competition Launch
Dear Pathway Leads
It is that time of the year once again ….. we are very pleased to launch the next round of the NINE DTP PhD Studentship competition. Please disseminate this information to potential supervisors in your Pathway / Institution / Department.
As well as the main studentship competition this year we are pleased to launch two new ring-fenced awards as part of our ‘Action for Equality’ Agenda for the DTP. Please spread the word about this new initiative. Having worked with EDI and Legal teams across our partnership institutions over the last several months we are pleased to be able to dedicate two studentships for home fee paying Black British and British Asian applications as well as those of associated mixed heritage. This new scheme is compliant with both the Equality Act (GB) and the Race Relations Act (Northern Ireland). Applicants who are eligible and wish to be considered for this scheme in addition to the main competition should indicate this intention on the front page of the studentship application form. All guidance can be found in the competition guidance notes. This new scheme will act on top of the initiatives we introduced last year which also remain in place for i) removal of the pathway quota for this applicant demographic, ii) optional one-to-one guidance sessions for applicants meeting this demographic criteria, and iii) an encouragement to you all to spread the word that we wish to encourage a broad and inclusive demographic of applicants in accordance with the People & Culture Strategy and the UKRI Ethnic Minority report (2021).
Please also remember that the DTP is able to award up to 30% of its studentships to non-home fee paying applicants and our partner institutions have agreed to fund the fee difference by providing additional scholarship to non-home fee paying awardees. The cap will work exactly the same as last year. Note that the ESRC is especially keen to encourage applicants in the area of Economics and therefore this year it is possible to allow up to 50% of applicants in this area to be non-home fee paying students. Please remember these caps on non-home fee paying applicants exist across all studentship structures (e.g. 1+3, +3.5, +3 and across all steers such as Cross-Council, Collaborative).
All other elements of the main competition remain the same as previous years. All guidance can be found on the website. See the information below for two applicant and supervisor webinars for further information or questions.
Last year we saw an extremely competitive field of applicants across all pathways and if we had funds available we would have been happy to support many more studentships. We anticipate an equally competitive field in the forthcoming round of the competition and look forward to being able to support excellent doctoral students with their training. Note that this is the penultimate round of current DTP funding, prior to significant changes that will be made to ESRC-funded studentships at the end of the current DTP arrangements.

Hand-in Dates
Arrangements for submission of expressions of interest (EOI) have now been confirmed.
The deadline for applications to NINEDTP is 23 March 2022; however, we have an earlier deadline for expressions of interest from prospective candidates to allow the School to appropriately manage demand and select the very best applicants.
We invite candidates to submit expressions of interest no later than 4pm Monday 31st January 2022. Expressions of interest should be submitted here, in the form of:
- 2 page proposal
- CV
- Applicant should name the member of staff who has agreed to act as mentor
The Fellowship will include salary costs, and additional funds may be applied for to support additional research activity, including travel, subsistence, conference attendance, training, and fieldwork. While the subject matter is open within the social sciences, the ESRC particularly encourages proposals that involve the use of advanced quantitative methods (AQM), data skills or engagement with partners in the business sector.
If you have any queries or need further information please contact Sara Maioli in the first instance.
Many thanks for your continued support of our doctoral students
Debbie Riby
DTP Director
*This is only for staff and for PhD offer holders only. Current students cannot apply for the NINE DTP funding. Only new students can be funded. Notice that the students should start in September 2022, so if a current offer holder wants to start in January then they can’t apply as the NINE DTP scholarship deadline is in January.*
