Engaging the Public in Controversial Research

Course blurb: This workshop aims to help researchers develop the confidence, skills, and knowledge to engage the public with controversial areas of research. Participants will have the opportunity to explore factors that make a subject controversial and understand where controversy comes from, as well as consider how to plan to mitigate/pre-empt the controversy. The workshop aims to mobilise the research community to engage the public with controversial areas around their work.

Learning objectives: Participants will develop skills and knowledge to:

  • Assess controversy in their own research
  • engage the public with their research
  • navigate controversy effectively when engaging the public.
  • better understand the values of those they are engaging with and how this relates to developing effective engagement practice
  • understand engagement as a key part of responsible research

Eligibility: This course is open to all academic staff within the HaSS Faculty (regardless of contract type). As the event is being led by an external facilitator, advance registration is required. If the event is over-subscribed, a waiting list will be operated.

Colleagues who are not social scientists can register for the event; we just collect this information for our own reporting.
