National Student Survey (NSS) 2022

The NSS 2022 is now open.

On 24 January, the University did a ‘soft launch’ of the NSS to let students know it was open and to encourage participation.

The target audience is all final year undergraduate students. We ask all staff to encourage students to take part in the NSS and share their views.

The NSS is an annual survey which provides valuable information from students about their experience and on their course.

We’re inviting all staff to promote the survey to your students to help raise awareness of the NSS, tell them why it’s important, and encourage them to take part.

Promoting the NSS locally is one of the best ways to help students understand the survey and respond with their views. The more students participate, the better and more useful the data. The NSS helps us to improve the experience for future students. The NSS also provides essential official data for prospective students who are considering higher education. The data is made public to help inform student choice through the Discover Uni website.

We really encourage you to promote the survey to your students. Although Ipsos MORI can send emails and texts to students who haven’t responded, staff can help students to better understand why the survey matters.

How the University is promoting NSS

The University will be promoting the NSS throughout the period January to April. From 24 January to 13 February campaign activity will feature across the channels outlined below. After this date, survey completion stats will be monitored, and targeted support will be given where needed.

  • University screens across campus
  • Launch and student voice videos on Twitter and Instagram
  • Emails (both direct to students eligible to take part in the survey and through the student newsletter)
  • Two blogs outlining the impact of last year’s survey donations and this year. Both will be posted on social media
  • Canvas

How the Business School is promoting NSS

The Business School will promote the NSS survey from 14 February. Communications will complement the University promotion and communications from Ipsos MORI.

The School will initially promote general NSS messaging for 3 weeks from 14 February – 6 March. Programme specific promotion will start from 7 March. Both will continue simultaneously until the survey closes on 30 April 2022.

Messages will consist of:

  • ‘Your views. Your NSS’ and ‘It’s time to have your say’ – this complements University messages and will reinforce the same messages
  • ‘You said, we did’ examples, specific to the School
  • Call to action: link to survey / blog

Channels will include:

  • Banners around School
  • Posters around School
  • Digital screens around School
  • Website banner
  • Direct emails to eligible students
  • Canvas announcements to eligible students
  • Newsletter features
  • Social posts
  • Student blog

We have an £5 voucher incentive for students taking part which they can spend at any of our on-campus food outlets.  London students will receive a drink and snack from the Middlesex Street Café.

NSS promotional materials

The NSS provides a range of materials for colleagues across the University to use to promote the NSS. All promotion must follow the stringent guidelines in place by Ipos MORI.

The Business School marketing team can support with marketing material if this is required.

If you require any additional support for communicating with your learners, please email Claire.Lavender@newcastle.ac.uk

Please note, there are strict guidelines for communicating with students, so marketing material must follow strict guidelines. Please do not create anything yourself.

There is also guidance on inappropriate influence. Please familiarise yourself with this guidance – see details below.

Guide to promoting the survey

Remember, it is important to be aware of the guidelines and what may constitute inappropriate influence. It’s important that students are free to give their honest opinion. Please read the inappropriate influence help card for more information. All internal activities should aim to raise awareness of the NSS amongst eligible students and encourage them to give honest and confidential feedback on their course experience.

Weekly updates

As in previous years, the University will be sending a weekly update on response rates to Heads of School, Directors of Education and School Managers.
