Abstract
The title of this presentation is taken from Bernard Baruch’s opening statement to the United Nations Atomic Commission in 1946. While it refers to the stark choices facing mankind at the outset of the Cold War, it also captures – in a far, far less apocalyptic way – the essence of stock-picking and equity portfolio construction today. The sheer rapidity and quantum of disruption affecting both asset managers and the companies they invest in necessitates ambidexterity. You have to be both agile and capable of quantifying agility to make money for clients. So, what is agility? How do you measure it? This presentation proposes answers to these two questions through the lens of the global Consumer Packaged Goods sector, an important part of what has become the ironically-named FMCG industry.
