Spotlight on Financial Services
If you’ve got money worries, the University may be able to help. This week we are highlighting the support available via Student Financial Support.
If you find yourself struggling to make ends meet and you’re unable to cover essential, day-to-day living costs, then our Student Finance Advisors can provide:
- Professional and impartial advice to all current and perspective students about student funding and finance related matters.
- Individual and tailored one-to-one appointments.
- Information leaflets and online resources.
They can help you if you:
- Want help managing your money and planning a budget.
- Are struggling to cover all your costs and want to know about the funding you might be eligible to apply for.
- Have queries about your statutory funding (student loan and fee loan).
- Want information about bursaries, scholarships and other funding schemes.
- Need information about a range of student finance related topics such as student bank accounts, TV licenses and council tax.
You can book an online appointment directly to meet a Student Finance Adviser. Self-referring appointments are available every Tuesday either online (9am to 4pm) or in person in King’s Gate (1-4pm).
Join over 400 students on their ‘Money Matters’ course on Canvas by clicking here
The course isn’t credit bearing and it doesn’t have assessments. It has four modules:
- ‘How am I going to manage?’ Covers the basics of income and expenditure, including loans and working during your studies.
- ‘Budgeting’ will show you practical examples on how to keep track of your cash.
- ‘Staying safe from fraud’ is about keeping the money where it belongs: with you.
- ‘Money and your wellbeing’ shows you that the benefits of looking after your money goes beyond your wallet.
You can contact the Student Finance Advisors by emailing student.fin-support@ncl.ac.uk or if your enquiry is urgent you can call 0191 208 2693, 0191 208 7098 or 0191 208 448.
Free-to-use Student Pantry
You can find the new Student Pantry inside the Students’ Union (Ground Floor, next to the Welfare & Advice Hub). All items are free for students, and you are more than welcome to take what you need (you do not need to consult with anyone). We hope that this will provide accessible, stigma-free support to students under financial pressure. All of the items at the Student Pantry are made available through financial support from the University as well as generously donated items from our own Co-Op.
