Newcastle University Business School
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
Research Conversations:
Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges for Business & Management Research
Organisers: Greg Bamber, Savvas Papagiannidis & Stephen Procter
NUBS Room 1.14 on Friday 15 September from 14:00 to 16:30
This research event is inspired by many recent important developments, including the advent of ChatGPT, an AI-powered model, capable of generating human-like text. As the increasing use of new artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies broadens and deepens across a whole range of human activities, this workshop will focus on what is taking place—and what might take place in the future–in the areas of management, organizational innovation, work, employment relations and other aspects of business (e.g. accounting, economics, finance, HR, marketing, OB, operations or information systems management etc.).
Format and Objectives
The event will be informal, in-person and participative. Participants are invited to consider preparing (and to submit a summary in advance) of up to10-minute presentation, summarising their own research findings and/or what they see as the most important emerging research issues. Making a presentation is not a condition of taking part in the workshop, and a variety of forms of participation is encouraged.
Through a discussion based on the presentations, it is hoped to achieve the following:
- a greater general awareness of research already being undertaken in the Business School (across all groups) and elsewhere
- the identification of possible future research agendas and collaborations that may be international and/or interdisciplinary
- a consideration of initiating a new approach in the school to foster research and conversations in this area
Immediately after the workshop, we may adjourn to an external venue to continue the conversations and to have an optional opportunity for informal networking.
Participation
Members of all subject groups in the Business School are encouraged to join the event. It is open to staff and PGRs. All those interested—whether wishing to present or not—are asked to contact us please with a quick expression of interest in participating and if so if you would wish to make a short presentation, providing a title. Any suggestions would also be welcome. RSVP please to email savvas.papagiannidis@ncl.ac.uk by 4th of September 2023.
Optional reading
There is a range of literature that you might wish to dip into, e.g., there’s a recent article “Human resource management in the age of generative artificial intelligence: Perspectives and research directions on ChatGPT.’ This includes many references. The co-authors include two from NUBS: Greg Bamber (Monash University & Visiting Professor, NUBS), and Savvas Papagiannidis (Goldman Professor of Innovation and Enterprise).
