Patents as a worldwide source of ‘elusive’ data
Speaker: Dr Rafael Corredoira
Rafael A. Corredoira holds the position of Reader in International Business at Newcastle University Business School. His work resides at the intersection of international business and innovation strategy. His primary research interest is to understand how organizations develop their innovative capabilities with the help of external actors, often from an international and comparative perspective. He examines the importance of social networks, industry associations, and country’s formal and informal institutions in the firm’s ability to identify opportunities and address problems when they have no experience to lean on. Corredoira has published in many leading journals including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Harvard Business Review, and Research Policy. His research received the 2021 Panmure House Prize (UK), the 2007 International Management Division Best Paper Award at the Academy of Management Meeting, and funding from the National Science Foundation (USA).
Corredoira received his PhD in Strategy and International Management from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He has 10 years of business experience at Compañía Bão, the largest and oldest household product firm in Uruguay at the time, where, as CEO and COO, he led the firm in its technological reconversion, organizational restructuring, M&A and foreign market expansion during the creation of MERCOSUR.
Abstract
In recent years, a wealth of patent data from across the globe has become available in electronic format. This development, together with astonishing advances in computational capabilities, has opened a unique opportunity for studying the evolution of technology, as well as assessing capabilities and knowledge at various levels, including the national, regional, firm, and inventor levels. It has also provided insights into collaboration and mobility trends within technological fields. Although notable progress has been achieved, it is important to recognize that standardizing patent data and harmonizing patenting regulations across nations remain ongoing endeavours. Furthermore, there is a growing global effort to devise innovative approaches for extracting diverse insights from the wealth of patent information available worldwide. This presentation aims to offer an introduction to the cutting-edge utilization of patent data and will cover:
- The sources of data that underpin such research.
- The formidable challenges associated with effectively utilizing this extensive worldwide dataset.
- Techniques for capturing key aspects, including the technological trajectories, technological positioning, and knowledge for nations, regions, firms and individuals.
- An examination of patterns related to collaboration and inventor mobility.
- The ability to study technological exploration/exploitation, novelty, and breakthrough characteristics.
The primary goal of this presentation is to encourage the exchange of ideas and facilitate ample discussion surrounding the potential integration and application of patent data in potential and ongoing projects and research initiatives among the attendees. It provides a platform for participants to explore both the opportunities and challenges inherent in harnessing the power of patent data across a spectrum of research areas.
