1: NEW: New UK Collaborative on Development Research (UKCDR) reports on international development research
The UKCDR have released two new case study booklets, expanding on their recently shared report, The landscape of development research impact: An analysis of REF2021 impact case studies:
- Realising the impact of UK international development research: A collection of REF2021 impact stories – including 10 case studies that show the connections between what type of real-life impact is achieved and how research is conducted.
- Evidencing the wide-reaching benefits of international development research – presenting seven case studies that demonstrate clear primary benefits within low-and-middle-income-country contexts and, additionally, positive effects in the UK and/or globally.

The European Commission is seeking feedback for the 2025 Horizon Europe Work Programme. This is an opportunity to provide input for the development of the Horizon Europe ‘main’ work programme 2025. Responses submitted through the survey will contribute to the co-design of the work programme 2025, which covers all 6 clusters, research infrastructures, European innovation ecosystems, the 5 EU Missions, and the New European Bauhaus facility. The feedback opportunity closes on 6 May 2024 at midday CET. Participants can provide feedback on multiple Destinations and/or Missions.
Events
- NEW: Horizon Europe Information Sessions and Workshop
As part of Europe Week 2024, the Research Funding Development team is delivering events to encourage engagement with Horizon Europe, the world’s largest funding programme for research and innovation.
The sessions will cover:
- Introduction to engaging with Horizon Europe, 09:30-10:30: giving detail on Horizon Europe funding opportunities and the process for application for UK participants.
- MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, 11:00-12:00: providing an overview of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships opportunity, including the eligibility criteria, and advice from a current supervisor based on their experience of supporting an application and implementing a fellowship project.
- ERC Grants Workshop, 13:00-14:45: for a deeper understanding of the European Research Council (ERC) Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grants proposal and evaluation format, and the key issues to be addressed in planning, writing and costing a proposal, section-by-section. Advice and insight also from an ERC grant awardee.

- NEW: Fortnightly Online Horizon Europe Drop-In Session
Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. UK organisations can participate in Horizon Europe calls for proposals on the same terms as institutions from other Associated Countries, including leading consortia. Please join the drop-in sessions with the EU & International Research Funding Development team via Zoom to discuss any Horizon Europe questions you may have. This could be on a specific upcoming call or a general enquiry about opportunities to engage with the programme. - MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024 Call Information Webinar, by UKRO
The UK Research Office (UKRO), in its capacity as UK National Contact Point (NCP) for the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), is holding two information webinars for organisations and individuals interested in applying to the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024 call (deadline on 11 September 2024). The two webinars will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the 2024 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowship Call. They will provide attendees with all the information needed to submit a successful application, including the MSCA eligibility criteria, available budget, and submission and evaluation rules, as well as practical advice on proposal writing.
European related funding
- NEW: Horizon Europe EU Missions
A €648 million top-up for the five research Missions in 2024. The Missions funnel research funding into demonstrator projects and actions enhancing dialogue, which in turn are intended to promote innovation and leverage external funding in the five areas of cancer, climate adaptation, oceans and rivers, soil and climate-neutral cities. The first 2024 calls will open between 18 and 24 April. The deadlines for most calls are in September. The exceptions are the Cities Mission, with some of the calls open from 17 September 2024 to 16 January 2025, and the Soils Mission with calls open from 8 May to 8 October. Joint Irish and UK projects must conduct a technical and economic feasibility study associated with the development and real-world demonstration of a Green Shipping Corridor route between the UK and Ireland. Green corridors are defined as zero emission maritime routes between two or more ports. Innovate UK (IUK) and the Marine Institute, Ireland will invest a combined total of up to £860,000 (€1 million) to fund feasibility projects. Each project’s combined UK and IE total costs must be between £50,000 (€59,000) and £250,000 (€300,000). The lead applicant must be a UK registered business of any size while other eligible grant claiming UK or Irish registered partners, including businesses, academic institutions and research and technology organisations can participate. Deadline 30 May 2024.

Advanced Grants provide support for established, leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high risk project. Advanced Grants may be awarded up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years, with an additional € 1 million available to cover eligible “start-up” costs and/or the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities or other major experimental and field work costs. COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility. MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships will be open to excellent researchers of any nationality. European Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to researchers of any nationality who wish to engage in R&I projects by either coming to Europe from any country in the world or moving within Europe. The standard duration of these fellowships must be between 12 and 24 months. Global Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to European nationals or long-term residents who wish to engage in R&I projects with organisations outside EU Member States and Horizon Europe Associated Countries. These fellowships require an outgoing phase of minimum 12 and maximum 24 months in a non-associated Third Country, and a mandatory 12-month return phase to a host organisation based in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe Associated Country. Deadline 11 September 2024.

- MRC Applied global health partnership:
Apply for funding to support a partnership to enable applied research that will address global health challenges and inequities. We will accept applications of all sizes, including large projects and small to medium-scale applications. We encourage applications from project leads based in: low and middle-income countries (LMICs), and UK working in partnership with LMIC researchers. Funding of £150k-£1M. Mandatory pre application stage, with stage 1 deadline 13 June 2024.

Projects funded should exhibit the potential to tackle large scale global research challenges, through the sharing of our expertise and showcase their potential to support delivery of UN sustainability goals. Their incorporation into devices or use in applications can be addressed but should not form the bulk of work proposed. Total funding £5M.

To promote the engagement of researchers affiliated to higher education and research institutions in the state of São Paulo in partnership with researchers abroad. FAPESP will match funding of up to $10k per year per project for a duration of up to 24 months. - NEW: Foundation Fighting Blindness Translational Research Award for Inherited Retinal Disease: https://www.fightingblindness.org/translational-research-acceleration-program
The Translational Research Acceleration Program awards will accelerate the movement of preclinical research toward an Investigational New Drug filing and into clinical trials to provide a robust and diverse pipeline of potential therapies to fight inherited retinal degenerations (IRD) and dry age-related macular degeneration. Priority areas are 1) Novel Medical Therapies, 2) Genetic Technologies, and 3) Regenerative Medicine. Project awards of up to $1M are available to applicants in a research leadership position.
