  1. NEW: Research Funding Development: Quiet Time for Writing: Booking now open for September 2024 to January 2025

Colleagues are invited to attend a series of research funding proposal writing sessions.  These sessions are designed to give you quiet time and space to work on your research funding proposal.  The time will be largely for you to write quietly.   1. NEW: COST Actions 2023 Announced The COST Association has announced the 60 new COST Actions which were successful in the 2023 open call. The 60 new COST Actions cover topics as varied as managing Artificial Intelligence in archaeology to advancing understanding of vascular liver disease

  1. HIGHLIGHT: Horizon Europe Pillar II day on 5th June with Zale Johnson, National Contact Point – at Newcastle University

Join us for an exciting information and engagement day on 5th June 2024 in the Stephenson Building with Zale Johnson, National Contact Point (NCP) and Global Innovation Lead – Security, to learn and discuss Horizon Europe collaborative research and innovation opportunities. Zale will deliver a range of informative and engaging sessions on how to participate in Horizon Europe funding, particularly Pillar II calls. Sessions will cover:

The aim of the event is to build a platform for everyone to share ideas and find suitable partners for future consortia on the Civil security for society calls in Cluster 3. This online matchmaking event will be focused on the research and innovation community based in Europe.

 

  1. Fortnightly Online Horizon Europe Drop-In Session

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. UK organisations can participate in Horizon Europe calls for proposals on the same terms as institutions from other Associated Countries, including leading consortia. Please join the drop-in sessions with the EU & International Research Funding Development team via Zoom to discuss any Horizon Europe questions you may have. This could be on a specific upcoming call or a general enquiry about opportunities to engage with the programme. European related funding

 

  1. INTERNAL SUPPORT: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/postdoctoral-fellowships

The aim of MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships are to enhance the creative and innovative potential of postdoctoral researchers with new skillsets acquired through advanced training as well as international, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral mobility. MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships support researchers with a doctoral degree and a maximum of 8 years of post-graduate experience. The mobility of researchers is a key requirement in all MSCA schemes. There are 2 types of MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships. The European Postdoctoral Fellowships support a stay of up to 24 months in any European host institution. The Global Postdoctoral Fellowships include an “outgoing phase” of 12 to 24 months to a host institution in a non-European country, followed by a mandatory “return phase” of 12 months at a host institution based in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe Associated Country. The call is now open and is scheduled to close on 11 September 2024.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to potential strong overseas postdoctoral level candidates in your networks about the possibility to be hosted at Newcastle University.   1. INTERNAL SUPPORT: ERC Advanced Grants 2024: https://erc.europa.eu/apply-grant/advanced-grant

Advanced Grants provide support for established, leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high risk project. Advanced Grants may be awarded up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years, with an additional € 1 million available to cover eligible “start-up” costs and/or the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities or other major experimental and field work costs. The call is opening 29 May 2024 with submission deadline 29 August 2024. Please contact the EU & International Research Funding Development team if applying as soon as possible, but ideally no later than 01 July 2024. The Innovative Health Initiative European Partnership has published draft topic texts for its next call for proposals, which is planned to be launched in a few months. The detailed draft topic texts are shared to give potential applicants additional time to build consortia and draft proposals. All information is indicative and subject to change.   1. European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare “Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare” call: https://www.eupahw.eu/call-1.html#

The European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) is a seven-year European Partnership launched under Horizon Europe in January 2024. The Partnership aims to boost research and facilitate cooperation in order to control infectious diseases of animals and promote animal welfare. EUPAHW has launched its first transnational call for proposals with a focus on ‘Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare’. The purpose of the call is to support the health and welfare of terrestrial and aquatic animals through research and innovation and the advancement of fundamental and socio-economic science. Deadline 8 July 2024.

 

  1. Updated WIDERA 2023-2025 Work Programme

The European Commission has published an updated WIDERA 2023-2025 WP with the following new calls/topics included:

During the info day, speakers from the European Commission presented the new call topics and explained the benefits of the proposed actions.   1. Updated MSCA 2023-25 Work Programme: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/news/msca-announces-new-call-dates-for-2024-calls

The MSCA is inviting applications for a number of calls through the recently revised 2023-25 Work Programme, with further calls anticipated to open later in the year.

  • MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships support excellent researchers undertaking international mobility either to or between EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to non-associated Third Countries. Applications will be made jointly by the researcher and a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector. The 2024 Postdoctoral Fellowships call has a budget of €417.2 million. The call is now open and is scheduled to close on 11 September 2024.
  • MSCA COFUND: The MSCA COFUND programme provides funding for regional, national and international programmes for training and career development through co-funding mechanisms. The programme supports new or existing doctoral programmes and postdoctoral fellowship schemes managed by entities established in EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries with the aim of spreading the best practices of the MSCA. The 2024 COFUND call has a budget of €104.8 million. The call has a scheduled opening date of 23 April and will close on 26 September 2024.
  • MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN): Doctoral Networks support doctoral programmes, by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond. These doctoral programmes will respond to well-identified needs in various research and innovation areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer research training, as well as transferable skills and competences relevant for innovation and long-term employability. The 2024 Doctoral Networks call will have a budget of €608.6 million. The call will open on 29 May 2024 and close on 27 November 2024.
  • MSCA Staff Exchange: Staff Exchanges fund short-term international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities at all stages of the innovation chain. Secondments must be between different countries and should lead to knowledge transfer between participating organisations. The 2024 Staff Exchanges call will have a budget of €99.5 million. The call will open on 19 September 2024 and close on 5 February 2025.

COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

  1. NEW: MSCA International Cooperation 2024

The objective of this call is to foster international cooperation in MSCA in Horizon Europe, through a dedicated support action to complement and ensure coordination between existing promotion channels at local level, and ensure consistency with formal R&I policy dialogues at the following two levels:

  • With countries having concluded bilateral Science and Technology Agreements with the EU (Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland, Tunisia, Ukraine and the United States).
  • At regional level, on bi-regional research and innovation policy dialogues, established notably with the African Union, ASEAN, LAC, Mediterranean partner countries, Eastern Partnership countries and Western Balkans.

15: NEW: MSCA Feedback to Policy Call

Under this call, the European Commission will award up to €2 million to map and assess thematic links between MSCA projects and their contribution to several EU policy priorities. It will also gather feedback from MSCA’s research and innovation community on how to maximise the programme’s impact.

  1. British Council Grants for international research collaborations (Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey): https://opportunities-insight.britishcouncil.org/news/opportunities/grants-international-research-collaborations-round-2

The ISPF Research Collaborations grants provide small scale seed funding for collaborations between the UK and the participating ISPF countries/territories in each call to: initiate new research and innovation collaborations; develop existing collaborations; encourage these collaborations to work with non-academic organisations and individuals; establish local hubs for UK- partner country/territory activity in a particular area. Countries initially joining this call include Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand and Turkey. Up to £80k available (£100k fEC). Deadline 09 July 2024.

The aim of the Africa-UK Physics Partnership Programme is to stimulate collaboration between UK and Africa based physicists. The programme will build and sustain a skilled and talented cohort of early career researchers to explore where physics can contribute to the challenges of climate change, sustainable energy and the growth of fundamental physics in eligible countries. The programme will develop equitable partnerships between Africa and UK based researchers. It will address identified challenges and barriers associated with undertaking physics research in sub-Saharan Africa, and will facilitate the sharing of skills, knowledge and expertise, vital for capacity building and research careers. Call to open 9 July, with workshop in Kenya 10-12 July and proposal deadline 17 September 2024.

 

General international

 

  1. NERC UK-Canada Sustainable Critical Minerals Research Partnerships Call: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/uk-canada-sustainable-critical-minerals-research-partnerships/

Funding to collaborate with a Canadian Alliance Missions critical minerals research project to develop partnerships to address key critical minerals research priorities around optimising efficiency and minimising environmental impact across critical minerals value chains. Projects can be up to £240,000 (fEC) over 24 months. Online networking workshop on 10 June 2024 with deadline 3 October 2024.

 

  1. ESRC Pre-announcement: The UK-Brazil global talent exchange funding opportunity pilot: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/the-uk-brazil-global-talent-exchange-funding-opportunity-pilot/

The funding is to provide opportunities for early career researchers from both countries and a wide spectrum of disciplines and backgrounds to develop new collaborations which will benefit their future professional development. The UK project lead is expected to develop equitable partnerships with researchers based in Brazil who should be on the application as project co-lead (international) to stimulate new research collaboration that can deliver mutual and tangible benefits. Project can be up to £20k over 3-6 months. Opening 06 June with deadline 20 August 2024.

 

  1. EPSRC Japan-UK joint opportunity in semiconductor research: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/japan-uk-joint-opportunity-in-semiconductor-research-jst-epsrc/

This partnership programme aims to support internationally competitive collaborative research projects between Japan and the UK focusing on semiconductor research. Research projects should address one or more of the following four priority areas of joint interest for both Japan and the UK: i) low power hardware for artificial intelligence (AI) systems; ii) power devices or radio frequency (RF) devices; iii) security by design; iv) semiconductor photonics. UK budget can be up to £1.33M over 41 months. Intent to apply due by 18 June with deadline 18 July 2024.

This programme provides UK-based researchers, active in any discipline within the humanities or the social sciences, with the opportunity to develop and lead international and interdisciplinary research projects related to the theme of Just Transitions. The objective of the Global Innovation Fellowships is to provide opportunities to UK-based early- and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions. Through the Global Innovation Fellowships, researchers in the SHAPE community will be supported to create new and deeper links beyond academia, so enabling knowledge mobilisation and translation, as well as individual skills development. This call offers opportunity for award holders to embed themselves and be based in the office of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin. Fellowships are for up to £150k for 12 months. Deadline 25 September 2024.

The OECD Cooperative Research Programme (CRP) on Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems has opened its call for applications for international event sponsorship and research fellowship grants to be funded in 2025. The UK is amongst the 30 OECD countries participating in the CRP, which supports research collaboration related to the sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture, food, forestry and fisheries. Applications should fit into one of the following three research themes: Managing natural capital; Strengthening resilience in the face of multiple risks in a connected world; Transformational technologies and innovation. The Foundation’s Life Sciences Grants offer support for novel and fundamental research projects that seek to address questions concerning the meaning and significance of life processes, by which humanity’s place within nature can be better understood. Support is offered for experimental and theoretical work on a broad range of areas and topics, including origins of life, complexity, emergence, evolution, human development, and ecological health and interventions. Apply for funding to act as a Knowledge Exchange Facilitator (KEF). NEW: Cure JM Grants for Juvenile Myositis Research Cure JM operates two annual grants programmes – Research Grants and Mental Health Grants – to support research to improve understanding, care and treatment of JM and the integration of mental health into pediatric care. The Research Grants are a maximum of $150,000 ($75,000 per year for two years) Applications for the 2024 round of the Research Grant or Mental Health Grant must be submitted to Cure JM by the deadline on 1 August 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Funding for Biodiversity Conservation Opens New Application Round The Darwin Initiative is one of Defra’s Biodiversity Challenge Funds. It awards grants for biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction activities in eligible countries worldwide.  Four of its programmes are now open to application:
  • Main (Grants £100,000 and £800,000 for projects lasting one to five years maximum.) Deadline: Stage 1) – 8 July 2024
  • Extra (Grants between £800,000 and £5 million for projects lasting between two to five years maximum are available) Deadline:16 September 2024
  • Innovation (Grants between £10,000 to £200,000 for projects lasting between one to two years maximum are available) Deadline: 21 October 2024.
  • Capability & Capacity (Grants between £50,000 – £200,000 between for projects lasting one to two years maximum are available) Deadline: 21 October 2024.
  1. NEW Dan David Prize For Historical Research Open for Nominations The Dan David Prize is a prestigious international awards programme that offers an annual fund of $3 million to recognise outstanding historical research by early and mid-career scholars and practitioners that deepens knowledge of the human past and enriches public debate with an enhanced understanding of history. Nominations (excluding self-nominations) may be submitted by anyone, from anywhere in the world. Nominations for the 2025 awards must be submitted by the deadline on 30 September 2024.

 

  1. NEW EMBO: Postdoctoral Fellowships Supporting internationally mobile postdoctoral researchers in Europe and around the world. Fellowships are awarded for a period of 24 months although shorter durations can be requested. EMBO provides grants to the host institution with the sole intention to cover the cost of an employment contract to be issued by the host institution to the awardee. Deadline: 12 July 2024

 

  1. NEW NIHR: Cancer Research Transatlantic Development and Skills Enhancement (DSE) Award Round 2 This award will fund UK early to mid-career researchers to spend between 6 and 12 months at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Intramural Institutes in Bethesda USA. The award provides funding for:
  • The salary of the award holder for 6-12 months
  • Travel, accommodation and subsistence costs associated with visits to the NCI hosts
  • Personal and family relocation costs
  • Visa costs and health insurance
  • Training and development costs up to £5,000
  • Conference costs up to £2,000

NEW The British Academy: Knowledge Frontiers – International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2025 The British Academy is inviting proposals from UK-based researchers working with international partners wishing to develop interdisciplinary projects involving both the humanities and the social sciences on the theme of ‘Just Transitions’.  Awards of 24 months in duration and up to £300,000 are available.   Deadline: 18 September 2024
