  1. NEW: COST Gender Equality Plan: https://www.cost.eu/uploads/2024/07/COST-Gender-Equality-Plan-09072024.pdf

The COST Association has published a Gender Equality Plan (GEP) outlining how it will support an inclusive culture and gender dimension in any research carried out in COST Actions. This GEP includes the following specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for COST in Horizon Europe:

  • 50% of researchers and innovators in COST Actions to be women
  • 50% of leadership positions on COST Actions occupied by women researchers
  • 50% of young researchers and innovators participating in COST Actions to be women
  • 50% of researchers and innovators coming from Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITCs) to be women.

The Academy of Social Sciences have released a funding report which documents the scale and trends in research funding for the social sciences in UK higher education.  There are some breakdowns on disciplines and includes information from European/international funding.

Horizon Europe looks to fully integrate Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in each of its pillars. In particular, under the pillar ‘Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness’, SSH is present across all clusters and is therefore a cross-cutting element of the whole Framework Programme. Join us for a dedicated North East event on how SSH can engage with Horizon Europe funding, where we will be joined by guests Kim Littlewood and Nic Wallet, the UK National Contact Points for Cluster 2 (Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society) and Cluster 5 (incl. Climate), respectively. We will also hear from the experiences of our researchers who have engaged with European funding.

The British Academy and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) are inviting applications from early career researchers in the humanities and social sciences to attend a research collaboration symposium on the broad theme of ‘Governance’. Interested applicants are required to complete an online application form via Flexi-Grant® by Wednesday 11 September, 17:00 BST.   1. European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis Research Training Fellowship: https://ectrims.eu/fellowships/ectrims-postdoctoral-research-fellowship-exchange-programme/

The ECTRIMS Research Training Fellowship Programme is a one- or two-year research-focused fellowship for young, postdoctoral neuroscientists to undertake training in basic, clinical or applied research related to MS at a host institution in Europe. The overall goal of the programme is to maximise exchange of information between MS research/training institutions and researchers and to help grow the pool of well-trained research scientists focused on problems in MS. The annual fellowship stipend is €55,000 for one or two years. Deadline 01 December 2024.

 

  1. European Research Council (ERC) 2025 call deadlines adopted

The European Research Council (ERC) is the European Commission’s leading funding organisation for supporting bottom-up, investigator-driven frontier research. This approach to research funding ensures that support is aimed primarily at new and promising opportunities, with a greater degree of flexibility. Research funded by the ERC is expected to lead to advances at the frontiers of knowledge and to set a clear and inspirational target for frontier research across Europe. The ERC has published the preliminary opening and deadline dates for its calls to be released for the 2025 cycle of applications:

  • Starting Grants – For promising early career researchers with 2 to 7 years’ experience after PhD: Opening 10 July 2024, closing 15 October 2024
  • Consolidator Grants – For excellent researchers with 7 to 12 years’ experience after PhD: Opening 26 September 2024, closing 14 January 2025 
  • Advanced Grants – For established research leaders with a recognised track record of research achievements: Opening 22 May 2025, closing 28 August 2025
  • Synergy Grants – For groups of two to four PIs to address ambitious research questions requiring coordinated work: Opening 11 July 2024, closing 6 November 2024
  • Proof-of-Concept Grants – For previous and current ERC grantees who want to explore the commercial or societal potential of their work. Opening 13 November 2024, closing 13 March 2025 and 18 September 2025

  1. EIT Community New European Bauhaus Connect Open call: https://eit.europa.eu/our-activities/opportunities/apply-connect-new-european-bauhaus-open-call-2025

The overall purpose of this Call for Proposals from the EIT Community New European Bauhaus (NEB) is to activate citizen generated solutions and initiatives to resolve challenges facing European cities and peri-urban and rural areas to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between people and to create citizen generated transdisciplinary projects that address sustainability, quality of experience and inclusiveness. Between six and eight projects will be selected with a maximum funding of €15,000 per project and a minimum co-funding rate of 20% across the project. Deadline 26 September 2024.

 

  1. European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenges for 2024

The EIC Pathfinder enables multidisciplinary research teams to develop the scientific basis to underpin breakthrough technologies. This route supports early stage development of future technologies up to proof of concept. The majority of funding issued through the EIC takes the form of Open Funding with no predefined thematic priorities. However, a challenge-driven approach is also used to provide funding to address specific technological and innovation breakthroughs, taking into account EU priorities for transitioning to a green, digital and healthy society. The fourth round of Pathfinder Challenge calls under Horizon Europe are now open for application. Applicants are able to submit projects to achieve breakthroughs in the following five strategic areas:

Grants of up to €4 million are available per project to enable them to achieve the proof of principle and validate the scientific basis of breakthrough technology (eg TRL 1-4). Proposals must be submitted by the coordinator on behalf of a consortium by 16 October 2024.

 

  1. Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) call: https://www.ihi.europa.eu/apply-funding/ihi-call-8

IHI has launched a new call for proposals including topics on heart disease in cities, big data and arthritis, regulatory sandboxes, and how best to measure the impacts of a therapy on patients’ lives. Call 8 has a maximum financial contribution from IHI JU of €47.55 million and consists of the following topics:

  1. A City-Based Approach to Reducing Cardiovascular Mortality in Europe.
  2. Novel Endpoints for Osteoarthritis (OA) by Applying Big Data Analytics.
  3. Modelling Regulatory Sandbox Mechanisms and Enabling Their Deployment to Support Breakthrough Innovation.
  4. Establishing novel approaches to improve clinical trials for rare and ultra-rare diseases.

  1. Driving Urban Transitions European Partnership: https://dutpartnership.eu/dut-call-2024/

The Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) European Partnership is a programme of JPI Urban Europe and one of 49 European Partnerships under Horizon Europe. DUT has announced preliminary details of its third joint transnational call for proposals to support transnational research and/or innovation projects addressing urban challenges to help cities in their transition towards a more sustainable economy and functioning. Two online information days will be held on 10 September 2024 and 9 October 2024. Pre-proposals should be submitted between 2 September 2024 and 14 November 2024.

 

  1. European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) calls

The Cluster 2 Work Programme for 2023-24 has been updated with 5 new calls, under the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH).

  1. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions calls:
  • MSCA COFUND: The MSCA COFUND programme provides funding for regional, national and international programmes for training and career development through co-funding mechanisms. The programme supports new or existing doctoral programmes and postdoctoral fellowship schemes managed by entities established in EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries with the aim of spreading the best practices of the MSCA. The 2024 COFUND call has a budget of €104.8 million. The call has a scheduled opening date of 23 April and will close on 26 September 2024.
  • MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN): Doctoral Networks support doctoral programmes, by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond. These doctoral programmes will respond to well-identified needs in various research and innovation areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer research training, as well as transferable skills and competences relevant for innovation and long-term employability. The 2024 Doctoral Networks call will have a budget of €608.6 million. The call will open on 29 May 2024 and close on 27 November 2024.
  • MSCA Staff Exchange: Staff Exchanges fund short-term international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities at all stages of the innovation chain. Secondments must be between different countries and should lead to knowledge transfer between participating organisations. The 2024 Staff Exchanges call will have a budget of €99.5 million. The call will open on 19 September 2024 and close on 5 February 2025.

COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

 

Official development assistance (ODA) related funding

 

  1. NIHR Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) Initiative: https://www.nihr.ac.uk/documents/research-on-interventions-for-global-health-transformation-call-8-stage-1-guidance-for-applicants/36246

The Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) programme forms part of NIHR’s Global Health Research programme and funds cutting-edge interdisciplinary applied health research in key areas in LMICs where a strategic and targeted investment can result in a transformative impact. The eighth RIGHT call is specifically supporting targeted interdisciplinary applied health research to develop and evaluate interventions to strengthen and improve prevention, management and response to unintentional injuries and accidents arising from any cause in ODA-eligible countries. There is a particular interest in interventions relevant to unintentional injuries and accidents occurring in relation to climate change and natural hazards. Awards of between £1 million and £5 million for three to five years are available. Deadline for registration and remit enquiries is 09 October 2024 with application deadline 23 October 2024.

The Darwin Initiative is a UK government grants scheme that helps conserve biodiversity and support the communities that live alongside it through locally led projects worldwide. It is entirely Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded, and therefore projects must promote the economic development and welfare of eligible countries as a primary objective. Darwin Initiative is expected to be mostly focused on Low Income and Lower Middle-Income countries, and at least 70% of funding will be allocated to these countries, however Upper Middle-Income countries (UMICs) are eligible. It’s ‘Main’ scheme is now closed for this round but the following remain open: Extra – Project with scaling pathway (£800k-5M, 2-5 years, deadline 16 September 2024); Innovation – Testing novel approach for potential scaleup (£10k-200k, 1-2 years, deadline 21 October 2024); Capacity – Developing Capability of local and national organisations (£50k-200k, 1-2 years, deadline 21 October 2024).

 

  1. STFC Africa-UK physics partnership collaborative research projects: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/africa-uk-physics-partnership-collaborative-research-projects/

Apply for funding for collaborative physics-led projects addressing the challenges of climate change, energy, and capacity building, across African economies. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for STFC funding and have a project co-lead based at a research organisation in Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. The total fund amount is £5 million. STFC will fund 10 to 15 projects lasting up to 24 months. Deadline 17 September 2024.

 

17: British Academy ODA Global Innovation Fellowships 2024: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/funding/oda-global-innovation-fellowships-2024/

The objective of the ODA (Official Development Assistance) Global Innovation Fellowships is to provide opportunities to UK-based early- and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions. Awards are for up to £150,000 for 12 months, with application deadline 6 November 2024.

 

 

General international

 

  1. IMINENT DEADLINE: Qatar Gulf Strategy Fund 2024-2025: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/qatar-call-for-bids-gulf-strategy-fund-2024-2025

The British Embassy Doha is inviting project proposals under the Gulf Strategy Fund in the range of £50,000 to £80,000 to be delivered by March 2025. The focus of this project is on collaboration to address the shared, and multifaceted, challenge of building and scaling AI ecosystems. This is about coordinating and aligning government, academic and commercial efforts and resources across a range of domains, building self-sustaining, dynamic, ethical, ecosystems which both produce leading AI-enabled enterprises and contribute more generally to national AI development and positioning on the international stage. Deadline 12 August 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation (GBSF) grant funding: http://www.gbsf.org.uk/grants/overview/

The Foundation’s aim is to develop good relations between the United Kingdom and Japan by advancing the education of the people of both nations in each other’s culture, society and achievements. Standard travel grants between the UK and Japan are £2,000, and up to £2,500 for visits of two weeks or more. This also includes travel for PhD students from UK universities wishing to visit Japan for dissertation research or to complete fieldwork. Applications for longer-term fieldwork of six months or more in Japan can be considered, with grants of up to £5,000. There are also reciprocal grants for Japan researchers to visit UK. The UK office holds three annual awards meetings, with application deadlines on 31st March, 15th September and 15th December.

 

  1. BBSRC-NSF/BIO lead agency 2024: Work with US researchers: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/work-with-us-researchers-bbsrc-nsf-bio-lead-agency-2024/

Collaborate with US researchers on a single joint proposal in the following areas: biological informatics, understanding host-microbe interactions, synthetic cells and cellular systems, synthetic microbial communities. The full economic cost of your project, including the UK and US components, can be up to £2 million. The duration of your project should aim to be between three to four years and must not exceed five years. Stage one intention to submit deadline is 31 October 2024.

 

  1. British Council UK-Japan research collaborations on ‘transformative technologies’: https://opportunities-insight.britishcouncil.org/news/opportunities/grants-uk-japan-research-collaborations-2

Grants up to £80,000 will be available for funding under this ISPF research collaboration programme for bilateral research and innovation collaborations. Projects should consider: • transformative technologies: artificial intelligence, quantum, engineering biology, semi-conductors, future telecommunications; • tomorrows talent: research capacity, research systems, research pipeline. Each proposal must have one principal applicant from the UK and one principal applicant from Japan both of whom must be leading researchers or established researchers. Deadline 17 September 2024.

 

  1. New Research Accelerator for Follicular Lymphoma: https://www.lls.org/research/research-accelerator-follicular-lymphoma-i-rafl-i

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and The Institute for Follicular Lymphoma Innovation (IFLI) have joined forces in a strategic partnership called the Research Accelerator for Follicular Lymphoma. Together, IFLI and LLS will invest at least $20 million US dollars over seven (7) years to encourage innovative research and to address some of the most challenging problems in Follicular Lymphoma. The grant program for RAFL-I will support two programs: A Synergistic Team Award (STA) [$6.5 M total award for 5 years] and a Translational Grant (TRL) Award [Up to $1.75M total award for 5 years]. Letter of Intent due 9 September 2024.

 

  1. EPSRC India-UK Joint Telecommunications Research: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/india-uk-joint-opportunity-in-telecommunications-research/

This international joint funding opportunity in telecoms research will support projects to further develop and strengthen the network and research collaboration between UK-based and India-based researchers. Projects are expected to link and run concurrently to the continuation of the UK-India Future Networks Initiative. It should have two project leads, one based at a UK research organisation and one at an India research organisation. Award range £800k – £1.06M for 4 years, deadline 24 September 2024.

 

  1. British Council Transnational Education (TNE) Partnerships Exploratory Grants: https://opportunities-insight.britishcouncil.org/news/opportunities/tne-exploratory-grants

The grants are open to institutions in the UK for TNE projects with Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. The fund will prioritise partnerships that focus on one or more of the following priority themes from the British Council’s TNE Strategy: i) Creating an enabling environment for TNE in other countries and strengthening the quality of TNE; ii) Contributing to the removal of barriers to TNE and supporting or creating new opportunities; iii) Supporting TNE to contribute to the transformation of local education systems and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Potential areas of focus include developing joint programmes and curricula, building the capacity of academics and staff, developing various models of TNE, working towards the recognition of UK degrees, developing processes, frameworks and guidelines for TNE collaboration and developing communities of practice. Grants up to £12k for 12 months, deadline 12 September 2024.

The Young Investigator Award provides grants to assist investigators in the early or pilot phase of a study or as additional support for a promising ongoing investigation. It is hoped that these studies will be further developed to attract future funding from other sources. Applicants must be five years or less from PhD completion. Covering Etiology/Pathogenesis, Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment/Management, awards are up to $25k per year for two years, with deadline 30 September 2024.

The Associate Teams Programme is one of Inria’s (National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology, France) main instruments for international scientific collaboration. It aims to promote and develop scientific collaborations throughout the world by supporting high-quality research carried out by ‘Associate Teams’ – joint research projects created between an Inria team and a research team from outside of France. The two partners (Inria and international) jointly define a scientific objective with clear added value for each of them, a research plan and a schedule for bilateral exchange of researchers and students. An Associate Team is created for a period of three years with grants of €7-9k per year, deadline 17 October 2024.

  1. Gain Time to Think – Residential Fellowships for Early Career Researchers in the Life Sciences: https://www.wiko-berlin.de/en/becoming-a-fellow/fellowships/college-for-life-sciences

Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study Berlin) is an academic institution dedicated to international exchange and the advancement of science and research. The institution operates an extensive fellowship programme which brings together 40 internationally recognised senior as well as promising junior scholars from all fields of knowledge, including the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts. The Gain Time To Think Fellowship programme. It offers excellent early career researchers in the life sciences and medicine the opportunity to take a break from their lab or clinical work. Fellowships last between three and five months and are based at Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, Germany. For the current call, spaces are offered between September 2025 and July 2026. The fellowship offers studio accommodation as well as a full stipend based on the applicant’s salary. The application deadline is 1 November 2024.

The British Academy’s Visiting Fellowships programme provides outstanding academics based in any country overseas with the opportunity to be based at a UK higher education or other research institution. The programme is open to academics at any career stage, and in any discipline within the humanities and social sciences. Up to £40k available for 3 to 6 months, deadline 23 October 2024.

EPSRC has opened the Outline stage of their next International Centre to Centre Research Collaborations Funding Opportunity (Outline Stage). This opportunity enables researchers from all EPSRC disciplines to apply for funding (of project duration 3-5 years) to form world-leading partnerships and work with the best international collaborators for their research. Full economic cost of projects can be up to £1,8M over 3-5 years. EPSRC will hold a webinar of 25 June 2024, with Outline deadline 25 September 2024.

 

  1. British Academy Knowledge Frontiers: International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2025 – theme ‘Just Transitions’: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/funding/knowledge-frontiers-international-interdisciplinary-research/

This programme provides UK-based researchers, active in any discipline within the humanities or the social sciences, with the opportunity to develop and lead international and interdisciplinary research projects related to the theme of Just Transitions. Awards of 24 months in duration and up to £300,000 are available. Deadline 18 September 2024.

Apply for funding to work with Canada-based researchers to mobilise, examine and synthesise humanities and social sciences research on the topic of envisioning governance systems that work. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for ESRC or AHRC funding. Funding is available for one-year projects.
