Celebrating Success – Dr Erwei (David) Xiang & Professor Marwa Elnahass

Congratulations to Dr Erwei (David) Xiang and Professor Marwa Elnahass whose paper Businesses that try to come clean about their impact on nature can end up concealing more than they reveal has been published in the journal Conversation Letters.

Dr Erwei (David) Xiang and Professor Marwa Elnahass from Newcastle University Business School provides expert insight into the role played by corporate biodiversity disclosures in preserving Earth’s nature and biodiversity. With the World Biodiversity Summit 2024 fast approaching—its first session on September 26, 2024, during the UN General Assembly and Climate Week NYC, and the second on October 26, 2024, during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity—the need to protect Earth’s nature and biodiversity has never been more urgent. In this context, this article is highly relevant. As businesses strive to align with nature-positive investments, a radical shift in how they interact with biodiversity is essential. Moreover, this article is very timely, as we head toward the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November. This is when discussions may emerge on how efforts to combat climate change can be strengthened through nature-based solutions, emphasizing the need to tackle both climate and biodiversity crises together.

This article is based on a study that we recently published in the journal Conservation Letters. This journal paper is a collaboration between researchers from Newcastle University (School of Natural and Environmental Sciences and Newcastle University Business School) and experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Church of England Pensions Board. This is linked to a UK Research and Innovation-Natural Environment Research Council (UKRI-NERC) funding that we have secured.
