Climate Action Towards Net Zero Emissions: Society, Economy and Culture

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming event, Climate Action Towards Net Zero Emissions: Society, Economy and Culture, hosted by the Energy NUCoRE in collaboration with the ESRC IAA. This event will feature an engaging panel discussion with experts in the field, followed by an interactive workshop designed to help participants explore and identify new opportunities.

Where and when

Wednesday 27th November 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM

The Core, Newcastle Helix

About the event

With sustainable futures core to the priorities of the University’s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account and a tremendous volume of research already underway in this area across the institution, the aim of this session is to help colleagues understand the wide range of Social Science-based research opportunities available to them.

Recognising that the drive to decarbonise is often viewed as an engineering/technology challenge, this session will emphasise the critical role that the Social Sciences and related HaSS disciplines can play in understanding, contributing to and facilitating progress towards the net-zero goal of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. By focusing on the social, the cultural and the economic, the session will help researchers recognise how their work can help drive meaningful change and highlight the role Social Science research can play in shaping comprehensive and collaborative action aimed at delivering a low-carbon future.

Starting with a panel discussion that introduces core projects and frames questions at the heart of the net-zero challenge, the session will move to a series of facilitated workshops aimed at stimulating discussion, connecting colleagues, setting out next steps and laying the foundations for new projects.

Aims:

  • To help colleagues working in and collaborating with ESRC disciplines understand the range of research opportunities open to them in this domain to further their work on the social, cultural and economic aspects of the net-zero agenda.
  • To show how funding from Newcastle’s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/hass/research/impact-acceleration-account) can progress and accelerate these research agendas by catalysing impact projects (that could be funded by the IAA).
  • To forge new links and connections across HASS, SAgE and other disciplines.
  • To provide a steer for further activities/events in this domain (perhaps involving external partners/or more focused work streams).
  • Build the awareness, teams and capacity needed to apply for larger-scale grants.

Thematic areas will include:

  • Decarbonisation
  • Supply chains and green business models
  • Data and life-cycle analysis
  • Governance and policy
  • Energy networks
  • Carbon accounting
  • Transportation
  • The built environment
  • Actors, enabling policies and removing barriers for climate action
  • Physical geography and net zero
  • Adaptation and the green transition
  • Urban/rural/coastal/community
  • Just transitions and energy justice
