 1. NEW: Research faces uncertain future in EU budget shakeup

https://sciencebusiness.net/news/eu-budget/research-faces-uncertain-future-eu-budget-shakeup?utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Research%20faces%20uncertain%20future%20in%20EU%20budget%20shakeup&utm_campaign=Science%7CBusiness%20Bulletin%20No%20%201245

The Commission’s roadmap for the 2028-34 budget has renewed fears that research and innovation will disappear into a European Competitiveness Fund. The European Commission is kicking off consultations on the post-2027 EU budget, which it wants to be ambitious “both in size and design” in the face of geopolitical tensions to unfair global competition. “The status quo is not an option,” the Commission writes in its outline for the 2028-34 budget, or Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), published on Wednesday. At its core is a Competitiveness Fund to “support strategic sectors and technologies critical to the EU competitiveness,” including research and innovation. “The Fund’s comprehensive architecture will allow it to accompany European projects along the entire investment journey, from research, through scale-up, industrial deployment, to manufacturing,” it says. For the next 12 weeks, a public consultation on the Commission’s plan will take place to gather opinion on the future MFF. Between March and May, the Commission will also convene a panel of 150 EU citizens who will be asked to make concrete recommendations on the plan.

2. NEW: EU to invest €50B to ‘supercharge’ innovation in artificial intelligence

https://sciencebusiness.net/news/eu-budget/eu-invest-eu50b-supercharge-innovation-artificial-intelligence?utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Research+faces+uncertain+future+in+EU+budget+shakeup&utm_campaign=Science%7CBusiness+Bulletin+No++1245

The European Union plans to invest €50 billion to support the development and application of artificial intelligence, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday 11th February, saying European AI innovation needs to be “supercharged”. Europe had been under pressure to respond after the US announced the Stargate initiative mobilising $500bn worth of investment, and Chinese company DeepSeek disrupted the market with the launch of its R1 model, a seemingly more cost and energy-efficient rival to established US players. This InvestAI initiative will supplement a €150 billion investment pledge from the private sector as part of the EU AI Champions Initiative launched on Monday at the AI Action Summit in Paris. This means Europe hopes to mobilise a total of €200 billion over the next five years.

The Turing Scheme is funded by the UK government and administered by the Department for Education (DfE), and helps education providers support their students to take up study and work placements around the world. Funding through the scheme allows education providers to give their students the opportunity to develop their skills, gain international experience, boost their employability, develop their language skills and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures. For the 2025 to 2026 academic year, the Turing Scheme is designed to meet the aims of enhancing skills, advancing social justice and ensuring value for money. Turing Scheme funding is a contribution towards the costs of international educational placements (such as travel, living costs, organisational support, passports/visas and specialist support for students with special educational needs/disabilities). In most cases, it is provided on a per-student basis. Deadline 14 March 2025.
