Future Flight Challenge Co-Creation Workshop Series
Opportunity for Social Science Researchers: Future Flight Challenge Co-Creation Workshop Series
The ESRC, UKRI, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, are seeking a cohort of social science researchers to participate in a series of co-creation workshops. This collaboration aims to identify the social aspects of flight technologies and infrastructure. A track record in aviation or transport studies is not required.
An Expression of Interest will be used to select participants. The deadline for expressions of interest is 12 noon 11 March 2022.
Eligibility
It is vital that social scientists are engaged from the outset of the development of aviation technologies. The Challenge is inviting applications from researchers across the economic and social sciences, as well as those within other disciplines. This may include, for example: behavioural or social psychology, disability studies, law, human geography, health economics, environmental sciences, engineering, computer sciences, community engagement, and participatory research, to name a few. Applications are welcomed from researchers at all career stages.
Workshops and orientations
All workshops and orientations will be hosted and facilitated online between 17 March and 25 April 2022. The workshops follow five key research themes:
- Understanding the Innovation Ecosystem
- Public and Social Readiness
- Impacts on Rural and Urban Environments
- Communities and Social Impacts
- Trustworthiness, regulatory frameworks and implications
About the Future Flight Challenge
The Future Flight Challenge moves far beyond traditional aviation sectors, encompassing a range of zero/low carbon technologies including:
- Drones: capable of carrying up to 2-3 tons for delivery of goods and services.
- Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles: people carrying electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOLs) air vehicles, colloquially known as ‘flying cars’ or ‘flying taxis’.
- Electric or hydrogen regional aviation utilising traditional horizontal take-off and landing.
