Abstract
Which factors explain gender differences in leadership? We exploit NHS hospitals’ responses to the Covid-19 pandemic to investigate three potential channels: gender differences in assignment, skills and leadership style. We provide some evidence that female-led hospitals had better pandemic performances and that skills and leadership style played an important role in hospital outcomes. However, gender differences in these factors do not explain gender differences in performance. The evidence in our paper questions standard narratives about gender differences and highlights potential avenues for future research.
