Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone
We wanted to make you aware that new signage and cameras for the Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone (CAZ) have now been installed and are in operation, however there will be no charges until next year.
The Tyneside CAZ only applies to buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and light goods vehicles that do not meet national CAZ emissions requirements.
It does not apply to:
- Cars (other than taxis/private hire vehicles)
- Motorbikes
- Disabled tax class or disabled passenger tax class
- Certain types of agricultural vehicles
- Historic vehicles
- Military vehicles
- Ultra-low emission vehicles
- Vehicles retrofitted with technology accredited by the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)
Other vehicles may also be excluded from paying the Clean Air Zone charge under local exemptions, more information can be found here – https://www.breathe-cleanair.com/exemptions
You can check whether your vehicle will be affected by the Clean Air Zone using the government’s online vehicle checker – www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones
Charging will be introduced in two phases:
- Non-compliant taxis, private hire vehicles, buses, coaches, and HGVs being charged from 30 January 2023.
- Vans and light goods vehicles will not face charges until July 2023 to allow extra time for vehicle replacements, which are currently affected by a national supply shortage.
