NU Race Equality Network Summer Lecture
20th June 3pm, Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building
Professor Jason Arday is Professor of Sociology at the University of Cambridge – and at the age of 37, this appointment makes him the youngest ever Black professor at Cambridge. His research focuses on race, education and social justice. Jason has established himself as a leading scholar in his field, publishing extensively on subjects including the experiences of Black students in universities, the under-representation of ethnically minoritised people in academic careers, and the long-term impacts of racial discrimination in education. Throughout his career, Jason has committed himself to helping under-represented people gain access to opportunities within the sector. The lecture will be followed by networking and refreshments.
NUBS Careers Future Focus: LGBT+ careers and leveraging identity advantages

Join Ste Dunn, Director of Northern Pride, in conversation with our very own Dr Emily Yarrow, to hear about LGBT+ careers and gain insights into what a more inclusive workplace for LGBT+ employees may look like. The conversation will explore some of the common challenges that LGBT+ individuals may face in the workplace; networking; employer support; and how LGBT+ individuals can leverage their identity and experiences to their advantage in the job market, particularly during times of austerity.
NU Inclusive Futures – open now
Applications are now open for Inclusive Futures – Newcastle University’s positive action scheme for under-represented colleagues with protected characteristics to build their skills and knowledge for current and future leadership careers with the University. Call for participants: Research on the impact of Newcastle University links to colonial history
The research team are looking for people who identify as racially minoritized/a person of colour and are staff member or student at Newcastle University to participate in a discussion-based workshop to reflect on the links between the University and colonial regimes. They would value contributions from racially minoritised individuals who feel they have been impacted by colonial history (however indirectly), regardless of how much subject matter knowledge you feel you have.

I also found this article on the language and tools for decolonisation really interesting, I recommend it particularly for those with whom I have had conversations around the term ‘decolonising’.
Business School EDI Lanyards and EDI Bookshelf
New Business School EDI lanyards are available to all to pick up from the 7th Floor Common Room, please do help yourself from the pile on the recently established EDI Bookshelf – this is gradually being stocked with books on a range of EDI topics, recommended by colleagues. Please do feel free to borrow a book and leave a little review on your return. You can also donate books to the shelf and/or let me know if there are any titles you would like to read.
Early notice: LGBT+5k Festival of Running
21st July, from 6pm, Newcastle Town Moor
Newcastle Frontrunners is again organising their LGBT+5k Festival of Running. I really enjoyed running it last year and although my knee injury means I won’t be able to join this year, there are many NUBS colleagues participating. All abilities are very welcome and if you would like to meet up with colleagues, do get in touch.
This year funds are being raised for Rainbow Home, a north east charity that support LGBT+ asylum seekers. Please see attached poster if you would like to donate even if you cannot participate in the run.
Linked to this, it is also the 25th anniversary of the Refugee Week campaign this year and is taking place 19-25 June, with a theme of ‘Compassion’. Events can be found on Sharepoint.
