Celebrating Success: Dr Cristina Neesham

Congratulations to Dr Cristina Neesham, who has co-authored the article entitled “Complex Online Harms and the Smart Home: A Scoping Review” (together with colleagues Olabode S, Owens R, Zhang N, Copilah-Ali J, Kolomeets M, Wu H, Malviya S, Markeviciute K, Spiliotopoulos T, Shi L, Chambers D), which has been accepted in Future Generation Computer Systems 2023 (In Press)

Abbreviated Abstract:

Risks, harms and vulnerabilities within smart home ecosystems and IoTs are ongoing issues with complexities that necessitate research. Privacy, security, and well-being are key themes that embody the scope of complex harms affecting smart home devices in the broad literature. This review establishes disciplinary research gaps, especially in user-centred perspectives, due to a heavy technology focus in the existing literature. We argue that further research is needed to address emergent risks, harms and vulnerabilities of smart home devices and understand how user agency and autonomy can complement the design, interface and sociotechnical aspects of smart home systems.

This publication is an output of the EPSRC-awarded Project “Assuring Citizen Agency in a World of Complex Online Harms”, where Cristina is project lead on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and co-lead on Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR). The paper has reached the SSRN Top Ten List of the following eJournals: Economic & Social Impacts of Innovation; IRPN: Innovation & Networks; IRPN: Innovation & Social Psychology; Sociology of Innovation; Psychology of Innovation.
