  1. NEW: Getting those Grants: How to Prepare Yourself for Funding and Write Your Proposal

Are you an independent researcher who is working towards submitting a research funding application in the coming months? The Research Funding Development team has launched a new series of training courses to help you prepare. They cover:

  • Session 1: Preparing yourself for research funding. Thursday 6th June 2024, 09:30-15:30
  • Session 2: Developing a fundable research idea. Tuesday 2nd July 2024, 09:30-15:30
  • Session 3: How to write a successful research funding proposal. Tuesday 16th July 2024, 09:30-15:30

All sessions will be held in-person in the Old Library Building. European related funding

 

  1. NEW: International Green Corridors Fund for UK-Ireland Feasibility Studies: https://apply-for-innovation-funding.service.gov.uk/competition/1908/overview/09df5ff4-245c-4e90-b2d6-aea922fe365a

Joint Irish and UK projects must conduct a technical and economic feasibility study associated with the development and real-world demonstration of a Green Shipping Corridor route between the UK and Ireland. Green corridors are defined as zero emission maritime routes between two or more ports. Innovate UK (IUK) and the Marine Institute, Ireland will invest a combined total of up to £860,000 (€1 million) to fund feasibility projects. Each project’s combined UK and IE total costs must be between £50,000 (€59,000) and £250,000 (€300,000). The lead applicant must be a UK registered business of any size while other eligible grant claiming UK or Irish registered partners, including businesses, academic institutions and research and technology organisations can participate. Deadline 30 May 2024.

Aims to boost the potential of social innovation to provide solutions to societal challenges and foster sustainable and inclusive growth in Europe. The year’s theme ‘Digital Democracy’ addresses an era of rising populism, disinformation, (deep)fake news, hate speech, polarisation, radicalisation, foreign interference, and lack of political participation of groups of society. The top three winning prizes will be awarded €75,000, €50,000 and €25,000 respectively. Deadline 25 April 2024.

Advanced Grants provide support for established, leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high risk project. Advanced Grants may be awarded up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years, with an additional € 1 million available to cover eligible “start-up” costs and/or the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities or other major experimental and field work costs. COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility. MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships will be open to excellent researchers of any nationality. European Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to researchers of any nationality who wish to engage in R&I projects by either coming to Europe from any country in the world or moving within Europe. The standard duration of these fellowships must be between 12 and 24 months. Global Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to European nationals or long-term residents who wish to engage in R&I projects with organisations outside EU Member States and Horizon Europe Associated Countries. These fellowships require an outgoing phase of minimum 12 and maximum 24 months in a non-associated Third Country, and a mandatory 12-month return phase to a host organisation based in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe Associated Country. Deadline 11 September 2024.

Global HPSR Projects should have clearly defined questions which specifically target an identified health policy and/or system(s) challenge or evidence gap. Projects should then set out how the outcome of the research will benefit vulnerable populations in LMICs (on the DAC list). Funding of up to £800k over 3 years. Webinar on Tuesday 26 March 2024. Apply for funding to collaborate with partners in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore on infectious diseases with antimicrobial resistance and epidemics potential. Multilateral research teams including more than two partners are encouraged. You can apply for up to £1,000,000 from UKRI.   1. MRC Applied global health partnership:

Apply for funding to support a partnership to enable applied research that will address global health challenges and inequities. We will accept applications of all sizes, including large projects and small to medium-scale applications. We encourage applications from project leads based in: low and middle-income countries (LMICs), and UK working in partnership with LMIC researchers. Funding of £150k-£1M. Mandatory pre application stage, with stage 1 deadline 13 June 2024.

Global health funding to address the management of multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) in the context of non-communicable diseases (NCD)—in partnership with low or middle income countries. Clear implications for reducing health inequalities. £5M available to fund several projects, over 3-5 years. Stage 1 deadline 15 May 2024.

 

General international

 19. NEW: FAPESP/MRC artificial intelligence (AI) for health: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/fapesp-and-ukri-mrc-artificial-intelligence-ai-for-health/

This funding opportunity allows UK-based researchers and researchers in the state of São Paulo, Brazil to jointly apply for funding to support research projects addressing artificial intelligence (AI) for biomedical and health applications that are relevant to Brazil. Both MRC and FAPESP will make up to £3 million available for this initiative for two types of grants ranging from pilot-type projects for young and early-career researchers to larger projects for more established groups. Applications must be submitted to FAPESP. Deadline 28 June 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Internet Society Foundation Opens 2024 Research Grant Programme: https://www.isocfoundation.org/grant-programme/research-grant-programme/

Supports global research collaborations that advance understanding of the Internet and its value for all. Proposals should address one of Greening the Internet, The Internet Economy, A Trustworthy Internet, or Decolonizing the Internet. Independent researchers may apply for up to US$200k or organizations and institutions up to US$500k. Deadline 14 May 2024.

The SBFT can consider grant applications from institutions for academic staff or students: i) To help academic staff and postgraduate students at UK academic institutions fund travel and living costs while they undertake research or study visits to China; ii) To help academic staff and postgraduate students at Chinese institutions to fund similar visits to the UK; iii) To support academic staff and postgraduate students in their study of Chinese languages. Applications are particularly welcome for projects which are outside the terms of other funding providers. No deadline.

Following the UK-US Cancer Summit, MRC and NIHR, in partnership with National Cancer Institute (NCI), are launching a second competition for the cancer research transatlantic development and skills enhancement (CRT-DSE) award. The NSF-led programme aims to fund international, interdisciplinary collaborative research centres that will apply best practices of broadening participation and community engagement to develop use-inspired bioeconomy research to address one or more global challenges identified by the scientific community. This international joint funding opportunity will support research projects in the field of semiconductors. Projects will further develop and strengthen the network and research collaboration between UK-based and Japan-based researchers.
