  1. European Commission adopts an amendment to the Horizon Europe work programme for 2023-2024: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_2104

The adopted texts of the work programme amendment are available on the Funding & Tenders Portal here. The amendment increases the 2024 budget by nearly €1.4 billion, including €650 million for the EU missions, as well as calls for open topics under the  ‘Health’, ‘Climate, energy and mobility’ and ‘Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment’ clusters in pillar 2. There is also new calls for the the New European Bauhaus Facility, the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage and pandemic preparedness.

The European Commission is seeking feedback for the 2025 Horizon Europe Work Programme. This is an opportunity to provide input for the development of the Horizon Europe ‘main’ work programme 2025. Responses submitted through the survey will contribute to the co-design of the work programme 2025, which covers all 6 clusters, research infrastructures, European innovation ecosystems, the 5 EU Missions, and the New European Bauhaus facility. The feedback opportunity closes on 6 May 2024 at midday CET. Participants can provide feedback on multiple Destinations and/or Missions.

  1. NEW: UK/Canada Quantum for science workshop, 18-19 June 2024, Toronto, Canada: https://www.ukri.org/events/quantum-for-science-workshop/

This two-day workshop aims to bring together researchers from Canada and the UK to build partnerships around: a) quantum sensors and detectors for fundamental and applied science; b) quantum communications, including ground and space-based applications. Travel and subsistence costs paid by STFC. Registration deadline 15 May 2024.

 

  1. NEW: CONNECTS-UK Event for European Researchers in the UK, 20 May, online and Coventry: https://connects-uk.org/event/connects-uk-european-researchers-in-the-uk/

CONNECTS-UK is a pan-EU platform in the UK aimed at fostering scientific collaborations between the EU and the UK, led by the community of EU researchers working in the UK. CONNECTS-UK’s upcoming conference will allow European researchers across all disciplines working in the UK to present their ongoing research. Abstract submission is open until 7 May.

 

  1. Horizon Europe Information Sessions and Workshop 

As part of Europe Week 2024, the Research Funding Development team is delivering events to encourage engagement with Horizon Europe, the world’s largest funding programme for research and innovation.

The sessions will cover:

  • Introduction to engaging with Horizon Europe, 09:30-10:30: giving detail on Horizon Europe funding opportunities and the process for application for UK participants.
  • MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, 11:00-12:00: providing an overview of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships opportunity, including the eligibility criteria, and advice from a current supervisor based on their experience of supporting an application and implementing a fellowship project.
  • ERC Grants Workshop, 13:00-14:45: for a deeper understanding of the European Research Council (ERC) Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grants proposal and evaluation format, and the key issues to be addressed in planning, writing and costing a proposal, section-by-section. Advice and insight also from an ERC grant awardee.

All sessions will be held on 7 May 2024 (times above) in the Keeton Lomas Lecture Theatre in Armstrong Building (ARMB.G.09.KLLT). Please register your attendance using this form.

 

  1. Fortnightly Online Horizon Europe Drop-In Session

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. UK organisations can participate in Horizon Europe calls for proposals on the same terms as institutions from other Associated Countries, including leading consortia. Please join the drop-in sessions with the EU & International Research Funding Development team via Zoom to discuss any Horizon Europe questions you may have. This could be on a specific upcoming call or a general enquiry about opportunities to engage with the programme. The Zoom sessions will take place on a fortnightly basis each Friday 12:00-13:00, next on 17th May 2024.   1. NEW: European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare “Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare” call: https://www.eupahw.eu/call-1.html#

The European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) is a seven-year European Partnership launched under Horizon Europe in January 2024. The Partnership aims to boost research and facilitate cooperation in order to control infectious diseases of animals and promote animal welfare. EUPAHW plans to launch its first transnational call for proposals on 8 May 2024 with a focus on ‘Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare’. The purpose of the call is to support the health and welfare of terrestrial and aquatic animals through research and innovation and the advancement of fundamental and socio-economic science. A webinar for applicants will take place on 14th of May 2024 from 10:00-12:00 (CEST).

 

  1. NEW: Updated WIDERA 2023-2025 Work Programme

The European Commission has published an updated WIDERA 2023-2025 WP with the following new calls/topics included:

  1. Additions to the Horizon Europe Cluster 2 Work Programme [Culture, Creativity and Inclusive society] for 2023-24 have been confirmed by the European Commission. Five calls under the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) are available in the 2023-24 Work Programme PDF and will shortly be released on the Funding and Tenders portal. All are ‘Innovation Actions’ and are opening 18 Jun 2024 and closing 22 January 2025.
  • HORIZON-CL2-2024-HERITAGE-ECCCH-01-01: Innovative tools for digitisation and analysis of dynamic processes, objects and complex combined data
  • HORIZON-CL2-2024-HERITAGE-ECCCH-01-02: Innovative tools for documenting, interlinking and organising data

  1. Updated MSCA 2023-25 Work Programme: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/news/msca-announces-new-call-dates-for-2024-calls

The MSCA is inviting applications for a number of calls through the recently revised 2023-25 Work Programme, with further calls anticipated to open later in the year.

  • MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships support excellent researchers undertaking international mobility either to or between EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to non-associated Third Countries. Applications will be made jointly by the researcher and a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector. The 2024 Postdoctoral Fellowships call has a budget of €417.2 million. The call is now open and is scheduled to close on 11 September 2024.
  • MSCA COFUND: The MSCA COFUND programme provides funding for regional, national and international programmes for training and career development through co-funding mechanisms. The programme supports new or existing doctoral programmes and postdoctoral fellowship schemes managed by entities established in EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries with the aim of spreading the best practices of the MSCA. The 2024 COFUND call has a budget of €104.8 million. The call has a scheduled opening date of 23 April and will close on 26 September 2024.
  • MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN): Doctoral Networks support doctoral programmes, by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond. These doctoral programmes will respond to well-identified needs in various research and innovation areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer research training, as well as transferable skills and competences relevant for innovation and long-term employability. The 2024 Doctoral Networks call will have a budget of €608.6 million. The call will open on 29 May 2024 and close on 27 November 2024.
  • MSCA Staff Exchange: Staff Exchanges fund short-term international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities at all stages of the innovation chain. Secondments must be between different countries and should lead to knowledge transfer between participating organisations. The 2024 Staff Exchanges call will have a budget of €99.5 million. The call will open on 19 September 2024 and close on 5 February 2025.

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Urban Mobility have launched their Main Innovation Open Call, with a focus on urban logistics, energy transition and public transport. Deadline 04 June 2024.

 

  1. ERC Advanced Grants 2024: https://erc.europa.eu/apply-grant/advanced-grant

Advanced Grants provide support for established, leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high risk project. Advanced Grants may be awarded up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years, with an additional € 1 million available to cover eligible “start-up” costs and/or the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities or other major experimental and field work costs. COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

Official development assistance (ODA) related funding

 

  1. NEW: Royal Society International Collaboration Awards – Brazil and South Africa (plus Least Developed Countries) – ODA-eligible projects: https://royalsociety.org/grants/international-collaboration-awards-ispf/

Funding for up to £225,000 over three years to enable outstanding emerging research leaders in the UK to develop research collaborations with international partners. Grants are open to newly independent researchers building their own group, who are ready to lead and drive the research vision of an international research programme. Deadline 25 June 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Mental Health and Wellbeing of Young People (Grand Challenges Canada and Being Initiative): https://being-initiative.org/funding-opportunities/request-for-proposals-funding-bold-ideas-for-youth-mental-health-in-12-countries/

Funding bold prevention and promotion ideas that address the early drivers of mental health and wellbeing for the most underserved young people aged 10- to 24 in: Colombia, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, Romania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Vietnam. Applications for three types of funding opportunities (Proof of Concept, Transition to Scale and Ecosystem Catalyst) are accepted on a rolling basis.

 

  1. Global Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) Projects Call 2: https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding/global-health-policy-and-systems-research-hpsr-projects-call-2/35549

Global HPSR Projects should have clearly defined questions which specifically target an identified health policy and/or system(s) challenge or evidence gap. Projects should then set out how the outcome of the research will benefit vulnerable populations in LMICs (on the DAC list). Funding of up to £800k over 3 years. Webinar on Tuesday 26 March 2024.   1. MRC Applied global health partnership:

Apply for funding to support a partnership to enable applied research that will address global health challenges and inequities. We will accept applications of all sizes, including large projects and small to medium-scale applications. We encourage applications from project leads based in: low and middle-income countries (LMICs), and UK working in partnership with LMIC researchers. Funding of £150k-£1M. Mandatory pre application stage, with stage 1 deadline 13 June 2024.

  1. NEW: Newcastle University International Office’s Global Partnerships Fund (GPF): https://www.ncl.ac.uk/global/global-partnerships-fund/

The Global Partnerships Fund is designed by the International Office to support and foster international partnerships, research projects, and collaborative activities that enhance the global reach and impact of Newcastle University. Whether you have an ongoing project that could benefit from additional funding or you have a new idea for collaboration, this fund can provide the support you need. Up to £5,000 funding is available for each new project undertaken before 31 July 2025 in academic year 2024/25. Deadline 02 June 2024.   1. NEW: John Templeton Foundation Life Sciences Grants: https://www.templeton.org/life-sciences-3

The Foundation’s Life Sciences Grants offer support for novel and fundamental research projects that seek to address questions concerning the meaning and significance of life processes, by which humanity’s place within nature can be better understood. Support is offered for experimental and theoretical work on a broad range of areas and topics, including origins of life, complexity, emergence, evolution, human development, and ecological health and interventions. Deadline for the first step, Online Funding Inquiry, is 16 August 2024.

 

  1. Darwin Plus accepting applications to support biodiversity in UK Overseas Territories

Darwin Plus is one of Defra’s Biodiversity Challenge Funds. The aim of Darwin Plus is to help deliver long-term strategic outcomes for the natural environment in the UK Overseas Territories (OTs). Four funding schemes of different scales, between £20k and £3M, are now open to applications with deadlines between early June and September (please check specific scheme).

 

  1. Royal Society: International Exchanges

Deadline: 05 June 2024. These grants are for UK-based scientists who want to stimulate new research collaborations with leading scientists overseas through either a one-off visit or bilateral travel.

 

  1. Royal Society: Kan Tong Po Fellowship

Deadline: 05 June 2024. These fellowships are for UK or US-based scientists who want to stimulate new research collaborations with leading scientists in Hong Kong through a one-off visit.

 

  1. NIHR Cancer Research Transatlantic Development and Skills Enhancement Award: https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding/cancer-research-transatlantic-development-and-skills-enhancement-dse-award-round-2/35793

This award will fund UK early to mid-career researchers to spend between 6 and 12 months at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Intramural Institutes in Bethesda USA: Centre for Cancer Research, and Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. The award is for UK-based early/mid-career researchers who are looking to gain training, develop skills and experience, and establish international collaborations with NCI researchers. It will support a transition to independence in cancer research. Successful applicants will become NIHR Academy Members. Matchmaking (mandatory) deadline is 7 June 2024, with applications due 02 August 2024.

 

  1. EPSRC Pre-announcement: UK-Japan collaboration in advanced functional materials: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/epsrc-uk-japan-collaboration-in-advanced-functional-materials/

Expected to open in May 2024. Projects funded should exhibit the potential to tackle large scale global research challenges, through the sharing of our expertise and showcase their potential to support delivery of UN sustainability goals. Applications should principally focus on the physical science or engineering of materials to deliver beneficial and enhanced properties. Their incorporation into devices or use in applications can be addressed but should not form the bulk of work proposed. Total funding £5M.

Apply for funding to act as a Knowledge Exchange Facilitator (KEF). You will bring together Humanities in the European Research Area funded projects on the theme of Crisis and set the theme within the context of values of the humanities, by developing knowledge exchange activities. £400-500k available. Deadline 09July 2024.

 

  1. FAPESP São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration (SPRINT): https://fapesp.br/en/sprint/call12024

To promote the engagement of researchers affiliated to higher education and research institutions in the state of São Paulo in partnership with researchers abroad. FAPESP will match funding of up to $10k per year per project for a duration of up to 24 months. Applicants must guarantee funding either from their own university or from grants awarded by a research funding agency. Next deadline 24 June 2024.

 

  1. Foundation Fighting Blindness Translational Research Award for Inherited Retinal Disease: https://www.fightingblindness.org/translational-research-acceleration-program

The Translational Research Acceleration Program awards will accelerate the movement of preclinical research toward an Investigational New Drug filing and into clinical trials to provide a robust and diverse pipeline of potential therapies to fight inherited retinal degenerations (IRD) and dry age-related macular degeneration. Priority areas are 1) Novel Medical Therapies, 2) Genetic Technologies, and 3) Regenerative Medicine. Project awards of up to $1M are available to applicants in a research leadership position. Webinar on 29 April with Letter of Intent deadline 04 June 2024.

 

  1. FAPESP/MRC artificial intelligence (AI) for health: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/fapesp-and-ukri-mrc-artificial-intelligence-ai-for-health/

This funding opportunity allows UK-based researchers and researchers in the state of São Paulo, Brazil to jointly apply for funding to support research projects addressing artificial intelligence (AI) for biomedical and health applications that are relevant to Brazil. Both MRC and FAPESP will make up to £3 million available for this initiative for two types of grants ranging from pilot-type projects for young and early-career researchers to larger projects for more established groups. Applications must be submitted to FAPESP. Deadline 28 June 2024.

 

  1. Global Centres (GC) addressing global challenges through bioeconomy: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/global-centres-gc-addressing-global-challenges-through-bioeconomy/

The NSF-led programme aims to fund international, interdisciplinary collaborative research centres that will apply best practices of broadening participation and community engagement to develop use-inspired bioeconomy research to address one or more global challenges identified by the scientific community. Bioeconomy is built on the foundation of biotechnology and biomanufacturing, and in addition to biological science and engineering includes contributions from fields such as: chemistry, materials science, geosciences, mathematics, data sciences, humanities & social sciences.
