  1. NEW: UK joins the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC): https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-joins-european-super-computing-scheme-as-world-class-british-researchers-now-able-to-bid-for-funding

The UK joins a world-class European supercomputing eco-system and unlocks an enhanced share of the Horizon funded portion, worth £770 million from 2021-2027. EuroHPC brings together supercomputing resources from across 35 countries, boasting eight supercomputers based in every corner of the continent. Membership means UK’s brightest minds can now work in partnership with European colleagues, and access EuroHPC Horizon Europe-funded projects.

Join us for an exciting information and engagement day on 5th June 2024 in the Stephenson Building with Zale Johnson, National Contact Point (NCP) and Global Innovation Lead – Security, to learn and discuss Horizon Europe collaborative research and innovation opportunities. Zale will deliver a range of informative and engaging sessions on how to participate in Horizon Europe funding, particularly Pillar II calls. Sessions will cover:

  1. Fortnightly Online Horizon Europe Drop-In Session

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. UK organisations can participate in Horizon Europe calls for proposals on the same terms as institutions from other Associated Countries, including leading consortia. Please join the drop-in sessions with the EU & International Research Funding Development team via Zoom to discuss any Horizon Europe questions you may have. This could be on a specific upcoming call or a general enquiry about opportunities to engage with the programme. The Zoom sessions will take place on a fortnightly basis each Friday 12:00-13:00, next on 31st May 2024. The Innovative Health Initiative European Partnership has published draft topic texts for its next call for proposals, which is planned to be launched in a few months. The detailed draft topic texts are shared to give potential applicants additional time to build consortia and draft proposals. All information is indicative and subject to change.   1. UPDATE: European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare “Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare” call: https://www.eupahw.eu/call-1.html#

The European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) is a seven-year European Partnership launched under Horizon Europe in January 2024. The Partnership aims to boost research and facilitate cooperation in order to control infectious diseases of animals and promote animal welfare. EUPAHW has launched its first transnational call for proposals with a focus on ‘Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare’. The purpose of the call is to support the health and welfare of terrestrial and aquatic animals through research and innovation and the advancement of fundamental and socio-economic science. Deadline 8 July 2024.

  1. Updated WIDERA 2023-2025 Work Programme

The European Commission has published an updated WIDERA 2023-2025 WP with the following new calls/topics included:

During the info day, speakers from the European Commission presented the new call topics and explained the benefits of the proposed actions.   1. Updated MSCA 2023-25 Work Programme: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/news/msca-announces-new-call-dates-for-2024-calls

The MSCA is inviting applications for a number of calls through the recently revised 2023-25 Work Programme, with further calls anticipated to open later in the year.

  • MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships support excellent researchers undertaking international mobility either to or between EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to non-associated Third Countries. Applications will be made jointly by the researcher and a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector. The 2024 Postdoctoral Fellowships call has a budget of €417.2 million. The call is now open and is scheduled to close on 11 September 2024.
  • MSCA COFUND: The MSCA COFUND programme provides funding for regional, national and international programmes for training and career development through co-funding mechanisms. The programme supports new or existing doctoral programmes and postdoctoral fellowship schemes managed by entities established in EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries with the aim of spreading the best practices of the MSCA. The 2024 COFUND call has a budget of €104.8 million. The call has a scheduled opening date of 23 April and will close on 26 September 2024.
  • MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN): Doctoral Networks support doctoral programmes, by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond. These doctoral programmes will respond to well-identified needs in various research and innovation areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer research training, as well as transferable skills and competences relevant for innovation and long-term employability. The 2024 Doctoral Networks call will have a budget of €608.6 million. The call will open on 29 May 2024 and close on 27 November 2024.
  • MSCA Staff Exchange: Staff Exchanges fund short-term international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities at all stages of the innovation chain. Secondments must be between different countries and should lead to knowledge transfer between participating organisations. The 2024 Staff Exchanges call will have a budget of €99.5 million. The call will open on 19 September 2024 and close on 5 February 2025.

 

  1. ERC Advanced Grants 2024: https://erc.europa.eu/apply-grant/advanced-grant

Advanced Grants provide support for established, leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high risk project. Advanced Grants may be awarded up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years, with an additional € 1 million available to cover eligible “start-up” costs and/or the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities or other major experimental and field work costs. COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

  1. NEW: British Council Grants for international research collaborations (Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey): https://opportunities-insight.britishcouncil.org/news/opportunities/grants-international-research-collaborations-round-2

The ISPF Research Collaborations grants provide small scale seed funding for collaborations between the UK and the participating ISPF countries/territories in each call to: initiate new research and innovation collaborations; develop existing collaborations; encourage these collaborations to work with non-academic organisations and individuals; establish local hubs for UK- partner country/territory activity in a particular area. Countries initially joining this call include Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand and Turkey. Up to £80k available (£100k fEC). Deadline 09 July 2024.

 

  1. NEW: STFC Pre-announcement: Africa-UK physics partnership collaborative research projects: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/africa-uk-physics-partnership-collaborative-research-projects/

The aim of the Africa-UK Physics Partnership Programme is to stimulate collaboration between UK and Africa based physicists. The programme will build and sustain a skilled and talented cohort of early career researchers to explore where physics can contribute to the challenges of climate change, sustainable energy and the growth of fundamental physics in eligible countries. The programme will develop equitable partnerships between Africa and UK based researchers. It will address identified challenges and barriers associated with undertaking physics research in sub-Saharan Africa, and will facilitate the sharing of skills, knowledge and expertise, vital for capacity building and research careers. Call to open 9 July, with workshop in Kenya 10-12 July and proposal deadline 17 September 2024.

 

  1. Royal Society International Collaboration Awards – Brazil and South Africa (plus Least Developed Countries) – ODA-eligible projects: https://royalsociety.org/grants/international-collaboration-awards-ispf/

Funding for up to £225,000 over three years to enable outstanding emerging research leaders in the UK to develop research collaborations with international partners. Grants are open to newly independent researchers building their own group, who are ready to lead and drive the research vision of an international research programme. Deadline 25 June 2024.

 

  1. Global Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) Projects Call 2: https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding/global-health-policy-and-systems-research-hpsr-projects-call-2/35549

Global HPSR Projects should have clearly defined questions which specifically target an identified health policy and/or system(s) challenge or evidence gap. Projects should then set out how the outcome of the research will benefit vulnerable populations in LMICs (on the DAC list). Funding of up to £800k over 3 years. Webinar on Tuesday 26 March 2024. Application deadline 19 June 2024.

 

  1. MRC Applied global health partnership:

Apply for funding to support a partnership to enable applied research that will address global health challenges and inequities. We will accept applications of all sizes, including large projects and small to medium-scale applications. We encourage applications from project leads based in: low and middle-income countries (LMICs), and UK working in partnership with LMIC researchers. Funding of £150k-£1M. Mandatory pre application stage, with stage 1 deadline 13 June 2024.

The Global Partnerships Fund is designed by the International Office to support and foster international partnerships, research projects, and collaborative activities that enhance the global reach and impact of Newcastle University.   1. NEW: Cures Within Reach call for Blood Cancer Clinical Repurposing Trials: https://www.cureswithinreach.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Blood-Cancer-RFP-2024-final.pdf

Cures Within Reach (CWR) is seeking clinical repurposing trials to address unsolved blood cancers, with a preference for trials impacting multiple myeloma and/or myelodysplastic syndromes. We are interested in generic or proprietary approved therapies that could be repurposed to create “new” treatments to 1) reduce the symptoms, progression or incidence of; 2) restore function lost to; or 3) reduce or eliminate severe side effects of currently used therapies for any blood cancer, thereby improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Budgets of up to $75,000 for the trials, with Letter of Intent deadline 29 July 2024.

The OECD Cooperative Research Programme (CRP) on Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems has opened its call for applications for international event sponsorship and research fellowship grants to be funded in 2025. The UK is amongst the 30 OECD countries participating in the CRP, which supports research collaboration related to the sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture, food, forestry and fisheries. Applications should fit into one of the following three research themes: Managing natural capital; Strengthening resilience in the face of multiple risks in a connected world; Transformational technologies and innovation. Deadline 10 September 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF) Small Grants: https://saveourseas.com/grants/funding-applications/small-grants/

SOSF Small Grants are aimed at early career scientists conducting new and creative start-up projects in the fields of marine conservation, research and education. Grants are intended for local projects conducted by local project leaders and are intended to give career scientists, conservationists or educators the opportunity to prove themselves. Projects must be concerned with marine chondrichthyan species (sharks, rays, skates, sawfishes and chimaeras) and should be of 12-18 months’ duration. Grants are up to $10,000 (with grants averaging $5,000). Stage 1 deadline 28 June 2024.

The Foundation’s Life Sciences Grants offer support for novel and fundamental research projects that seek to address questions concerning the meaning and significance of life processes, by which humanity’s place within nature can be better understood. Support is offered for experimental and theoretical work on a broad range of areas and topics, including origins of life, complexity, emergence, evolution, human development, and ecological health and interventions. Deadline for the first step, Online Funding Inquiry, is 16 August 2024.

 

  1. Darwin Plus accepting applications to support biodiversity in UK Overseas Territories

Darwin Plus is one of Defra’s Biodiversity Challenge Funds. The aim of Darwin Plus is to help deliver long-term strategic outcomes for the natural environment in the UK Overseas Territories (OTs). Four funding schemes of different scales, between £20k and £3M, are now open to applications with deadlines between early June and September (please check specific scheme).

 

  1. Royal Society: International Exchanges

Deadline: 05 June 2024. These grants are for UK-based scientists who want to stimulate new research collaborations with leading scientists overseas through either a one-off visit or bilateral travel.

 

  1. AHRC Support knowledge exchange for European humanities research: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/support-knowledge-exchange-for-european-humanities-research/

Apply for funding to act as a Knowledge Exchange Facilitator (KEF). You will bring together Humanities in the European Research Area funded projects on the theme of Crisis and set the theme within the context of values of the humanities, by developing knowledge exchange activities. £400-500k available. Deadline 09 July 2024.

 

  1. FAPESP/MRC artificial intelligence (AI) for health: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/fapesp-and-ukri-mrc-artificial-intelligence-ai-for-health/

This funding opportunity allows UK-based researchers and researchers in the state of São Paulo, Brazil to jointly apply for funding to support research projects addressing artificial intelligence (AI) for biomedical and health applications that are relevant to Brazil. Both MRC and FAPESP will make up to £3 million available for this initiative for two types of grants ranging from pilot-type projects for young and early-career researchers to larger projects for more established groups. Applications must be submitted to FAPESP. Deadline 28 June 2024.

The NSF-led programme aims to fund international, interdisciplinary collaborative research centres that will apply best practices of broadening participation and community engagement to develop use-inspired bioeconomy research to address one or more global challenges identified by the scientific community. Bioeconomy is built on the foundation of biotechnology and biomanufacturing, and in addition to biological science and engineering includes contributions from fields such as: chemistry, materials science, geosciences, mathematics, data sciences, humanities & social sciences.   1. American Association for Cancer Research—Novocure

Career Development Award for Cancer Research: $300k over 3 years for independent research staff in receipt of their first faculty position within the past 6 years (before December 1, 2024).

Cancer Research Grants: $350k over 3 years for  independent investigators.

In both cases, research projects should examine the use of TTFields as a therapeutic modality for cancer. AACR membership is required. Non-members must submit a satisfactory application for AACR Active Membership by the grant application deadline of 1 July 2024.
