NEW MSCA4Ukraine Re-launch Webinar and Info Day (Friday 14th June 13:00-15:00) With a recent top up ofEUR 10 million from the European Commission, the MSCA4Ukraine initiative will support additional researchers displaced from Ukraine. The second call for applications is expected to be published in June 2024. The European Commission is hosting a relaunch events and Information Day in support of the MSCA4Ukraine initiative.   1. NEW European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage Information Day 2024 (Friday 14th June 09:00)

The European Commission will hold the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) information event to support stakeholders interested in the Horizon Europe Cluster 2 call for proposals 2024 dedicated to this new EU initiative. The agenda includes information presentations about the ECCCH call topics and a question and answer session with European Commission officials via Slido. NEW Online Horizon Europe Health – Introduction and Overview (Tuesday 18 June 12-13:30): The aims of this cluster include improving and protecting the health and well-being of citizens of all ages by generating new knowledge, developing innovative solutions and integrating where relevant a gender perspective to prevent, diagnose, monitor, treat and cure diseases. 6. Research Funding Development: Quiet Time for Writing: Booking now open for September 2024 to January 2025

Colleagues are invited to attend a series of research funding proposal writing sessions.  These sessions are designed to give you quiet time and space to work on your research funding proposal.  The time will be largely for you to write quietly.   1. Fortnightly Online Horizon Europe Drop-In Session

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. UK organisations can participate in Horizon Europe calls for proposals on the same terms as institutions from other Associated Countries, including leading consortia. Please join the drop-in sessions with the EU & International Research Funding Development team via Zoom to discuss any Horizon Europe questions you may have. This could be on a specific upcoming call or a general enquiry about opportunities to engage with the programme.   1. INTERNAL SUPPORT: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/postdoctoral-fellowships

The aim of MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships are to enhance the creative and innovative potential of postdoctoral researchers with new skillsets acquired through advanced training as well as international, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral mobility. MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships support researchers with a doctoral degree and a maximum of 8 years of post-graduate experience. The mobility of researchers is a key requirement in all MSCA schemes. There are 2 types of MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships. The European Postdoctoral Fellowships support a stay of up to 24 months in any European host institution. The Global Postdoctoral Fellowships include an “outgoing phase” of 12 to 24 months to a host institution in a non-European country, followed by a mandatory “return phase” of 12 months at a host institution based in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe Associated Country. The call is now open and is scheduled to close on 11 September 2024.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to potential strong overseas postdoctoral level candidates in your networks about the possibility to be hosted at Newcastle University.   1. INTERNAL SUPPORT: ERC Advanced Grants 2024: https://erc.europa.eu/apply-grant/advanced-grant

Advanced Grants provide support for established, leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, high risk project. Advanced Grants may be awarded up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years, with an additional € 1 million available to cover eligible “start-up” costs and/or the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities or other major experimental and field work costs. The call is opening 29 May 2024 with submission deadline 29 August 2024. The Innovative Health Initiative European Partnership has published draft topic texts for its next call for proposals, which is planned to be launched in a few months.   1. European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare “Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare” call: https://www.eupahw.eu/call-1.html#

The European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) is a seven-year European Partnership launched under Horizon Europe in January 2024. The Partnership aims to boost research and facilitate cooperation in order to control infectious diseases of animals and promote animal welfare. EUPAHW has launched its first transnational call for proposals with a focus on ‘Supporting the Future of Animal Health and Welfare’. The purpose of the call is to support the health and welfare of terrestrial and aquatic animals through research and innovation and the advancement of fundamental and socio-economic science. Deadline 8 July 2024.

 

  1. Updated WIDERA 2023-2025 Work Programme

The European Commission has published an updated WIDERA 2023-2025 WP with the following new calls/topics included:

The MSCA is inviting applications for a number of calls through the recently revised 2023-25 Work Programme, with further calls anticipated to open later in the year.

  • MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships support excellent researchers undertaking international mobility either to or between EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to non-associated Third Countries. Applications will be made jointly by the researcher and a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector. The 2024 Postdoctoral Fellowships call has a budget of €417.2 million. The call is now open and is scheduled to close on 11 September 2024.
  • MSCA COFUND: The MSCA COFUND programme provides funding for regional, national and international programmes for training and career development through co-funding mechanisms. The programme supports new or existing doctoral programmes and postdoctoral fellowship schemes managed by entities established in EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries with the aim of spreading the best practices of the MSCA. The 2024 COFUND call has a budget of €104.8 million. The call has a scheduled opening date of 23 April and will close on 26 September 2024.
  • MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN): Doctoral Networks support doctoral programmes, by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond. These doctoral programmes will respond to well-identified needs in various research and innovation areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer research training, as well as transferable skills and competences relevant for innovation and long-term employability. The 2024 Doctoral Networks call will have a budget of €608.6 million. The call will open on 29 May 2024 and close on 27 November 2024.
  • MSCA Staff Exchange: Staff Exchanges fund short-term international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities at all stages of the innovation chain. Secondments must be between different countries and should lead to knowledge transfer between participating organisations. The 2024 Staff Exchanges call will have a budget of €99.5 million. The call will open on 19 September 2024 and close on 5 February 2025.

COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

16 NEW canSERV Launches Challenge-Driven TNA Call Focused on Revolutionising Cancer Patient Care

canSERV is an EU-funded Research Infrastructure cluster project under the Horizon Europe programme and is inviting applications for a challenge-driven call focused on ‘Revolutionising Cancer Patient Care’. The call provides free access for researchers around the globe to cutting-edge transnational services to improve treatment and patients’ outcomes through innovative ways to address clinical trials and research.

​Projects submitted in response to the call should focus on one of the following two topics:

  1. Tailoring research to address the different age groups, paediatric patients, and elderly patients, to ensure optimal treatment outcomes across diverse populations.
  2. Designing and developing improved clinical trials to address diverse populations and expanding the scope to incorporate broader representation of patients from EU, including efforts to match control groups, thus advancing trial efficiency and equity in treatment access.

The indicative overall budget for the call is €600,000.

17 NEW Net4Society Publication on Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) Opportunities in Horizon Europe

Net4Society, the network of National Contact Points for Cluster 2, has published an updated version of its analysis of SSH-relevant topics in the Work Programme 2023-25 to help potential proposers find topics of interest where their respective research disciplines are being sought by consortia. This document is a crucial resource for finding calls and topics relevant to the Social Sciences and Humanities across Horizon Europe.

 

18 NEW MSCA4Ukraine Call 2024 https://sareurope.eu/msca4ukraine/information-for-applicants/

The European Commission has announced the re-launch of the MSCA4Ukraine scheme to support displaced scientists from Ukraine. It will provide fellowships for doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers, thus allowing them to continue their work in academic or non-academic organisations in EU Member States and countries associated to Horizon Europe (including the U.K) The second call for applications is expected to be published in June 2024 and interested parties are encouraged to subscribe to the dedicated mailing list.

The ISPF Research Collaborations grants provide small scale seed funding for collaborations between the UK and the participating ISPF countries/territories in each call to: initiate new research and innovation collaborations; develop existing collaborations; encourage these collaborations to work with non-academic organisations and individuals; establish local hubs for UK- partner country/territory activity in a particular area. Countries initially joining this call include Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand and Turkey. Up to £80k available (£100k fEC). Deadline 09 July 2024.

The aim of the Africa-UK Physics Partnership Programme is to stimulate collaboration between UK and Africa based physicists. The programme will build and sustain a skilled and talented cohort of early career researchers to explore where physics can contribute to the challenges of climate change, sustainable energy and the growth of fundamental physics in eligible countries. The programme will develop equitable partnerships between Africa and UK based researchers. It will address identified challenges and barriers associated with undertaking physics research in sub-Saharan Africa, and will facilitate the sharing of skills, knowledge and expertise, vital for capacity building and research careers. Call to open 9 July, with workshop in Kenya 10-12 July and proposal deadline 17 September 2024.

Funding to collaborate with a Canadian Alliance Missions critical minerals research project to develop partnerships to address key critical minerals research priorities around optimising efficiency and minimising environmental impact across critical minerals value chains. Projects can be up to £240,000 (fEC) over 24 months. Online networking workshop on 10 June 2024 with deadline 3 October 2024.

The funding is to provide opportunities for early career researchers from both countries and a wide spectrum of disciplines and backgrounds to develop new collaborations which will benefit their future professional development. The UK project lead is expected to develop equitable partnerships with researchers based in Brazil who should be on the application as project co-lead (international) to stimulate new research collaboration that can deliver mutual and tangible benefits. The OECD Cooperative Research Programme (CRP) on Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems has opened its call for applications for international event sponsorship and research fellowship grants to be funded in 2025. The UK is amongst the 30 OECD countries participating in the CRP, which supports research collaboration related to the sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture, food, forestry and fisheries. Applications should fit into one of the following three research themes: Managing natural capital; Strengthening resilience in the face of multiple risks in a connected world; Transformational technologies and innovation. British Academy: Knowledge Frontiers – International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2025 The British Academy is inviting proposals from UK-based researchers working with international partners wishing to develop interdisciplinary projects involving both the humanities and the social sciences on the theme of ‘Just Transitions’.  Awards of 24 months in duration and up to £300,000 are available.   Deadline: 18 September 2024
  2. NEW Collaborative Opportunity for UK-Japan Research in Advanced Functional Materials

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in collaboration with the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) is providing funding through the UK government’s International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) to facilitate international research collaborations between the UK and Japan in the field of advanced materials. Projects should facilitate the sharing of expertise and demonstrate the potential to tackle large scale global research challenges and support delivery of UN sustainability goals. EPSRC is providing £5 million through the opportunity to fund up to 15 projects lasting up to 36 months. Funding will be provided at 80% full economic cost (FEC). The FEC of the UK project work can be up to £375,000, meaning EPSRC will provide up to £300,000. Further information can be found here.

NEW EPSRC International Centre to Centre Research Collaborations 2024  EPSRC will soon be launching their next International Centre to Centre Research Collaborations Funding Opportunity (Outline Stage). This opportunity enables researchers from all EPSRC disciplines to apply for funding (of project duration 3-5 years) to form world-leading partnerships and work with the best international collaborators for their research. EPSRC anticipate the outline stage of this opportunity to open in early June 2024, with a webinar during late June.   2. NEW Synthesising research on envisioning governance systems that work Apply for funding to work with Canada-based researchers to mobilise, examine and synthesise humanities and social sciences research on the topic of envisioning governance systems that work. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for ESRC or AHRC funding. Funding is available for one-year projects.
