About the NUCoRE
Our Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence (NUCoREs) are a transformative initiative within the University’s Research Strategy; they seek to deliver important research missions through diverse teams. A small team led by Professor William Willats (School of Natural and Environmental Sciences) has taken its first steps to develop a NUCoRE in Industrial Biotechnology (IB) with the mission of enabling the transition towards bio-based solutions to global challenges through innovative research in close collaboration with industrial partners.
IB is an area of considerable strength at Newcastle University and it is relevant to all three Faculties, and our international campus in Singapore. There is an abundance of evidence that IB delivers real-world, quantifiable impacts to individuals and society.
Cross-faculty research themes will include (but not be restricted to): synthetic biology; industrial enzymes; protein engineering; natural products; bio-refining; bio-energy; crop protection and engineering; agrotechnology; biomaterials and architecture; skin and oral care; data science; computing; AI; machine learning; social science. The NUCoRE will also include research into the commercial, ethical, and societal implications of IB. If this sounds like an area that links to your area of expertise, then we want to hear from you.
About the first Community Workshop
At our first Community Workshop, we will showcase existing research in this area across the University. For example, Proctor and Gamble will share their current commercial interests in this area of research. We will also have an opening presentation by Prof Ian Head (Dean of Research and Innovation, SAgE) on NUCoRE developments across the University. As a community, we will consider how we at Newcastle University have the competitive edge and how as a NUCoRE we can seize opportunities as a collective research community.
