News

 

  1. NEW: Assessment of Horizon lump sum funding: https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/support/news/30194

Lump sum funding is used by the European Commission (EC) as a means of simplifying EU grants. It was first introduced as a pilot under the final three years of Horizon 2020, and has since been introduced more widely in Horizon Europe. The new report confirms that lump sum funding continues to be popular with users, lump sums are perceived as reducing administrative burden, and that the concerns of some stakeholder groups, such as higher financial risk, have not materialized.

 

  1. NEW: The Future of European Competitiveness Report: https://commission.europa.eu/topics/strengthening-european-competitiveness/eu-competitiveness-looking-ahead_en

The report analyses the current challenges faced by industries and companies in the European Single Market, and its findings will contribute to the European Commission’s new plan for sustainable prosperity and competitiveness in Europe, particularly the development of the new Clean Industrial Deal which featured in Ursula von der Leyen’s political guidelines for 2024-2029. The Draghi report calls for radical change to ensure that the European Union is not left behind on the world stage in terms of growth and innovation, which Draghi describes as an “existential challenge”.

  1. 7. REMINDER: NU Horizon Europe Travel Fund:

The purpose of the Horizon Europe travel fund is to support the development of proposals to Horizon Europe funding opportunities. canSERV is an EU-funded Research Infrastructure cluster project under the Horizon Europe programme that unites leading cancer research services onto a single platform, providing cutting-edge, interdisciplinary and customised oncology services across the entire cancer continuum. canSERV offers a comprehensive portfolio of oncology-related research services available to all scientists in EU member countries, associated countries and beyond. It achieves this by offering TransNational and virtual Access (TNA) calls to facilitate access to unique services and resources usually unavailable to most scientists, and promoting research with a cross-border dimension.   1. Driving Urban Transitions European Partnership Joint Call: https://dutpartnership.eu/dut-call-2024/

The purpose of this Call for proposals is to support transnational research and/or innovation projects addressing urban challenges to help cities in their transition towards a more sustainable economy and functioning. The challenges are grouped into three themes called ‘Transition Pathways’: Circular Urban Economies, 15-minute City and Positive Energy Districts. Deadline 28 November 2024.

 

  1. EASO/Novo Nordisk Foundation Obesity Prize for Excellence and New Investigator Awards: https://easo.org/2025-award-applications/

The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) and the Novo Nordisk Foundation co-fund the Obesity Prize for Excellence to recognise researchers who have made outstanding research or technological contributions to understanding of the aetiology, complications, treatment or prevention of obesity. Deadline 16 December 2024.

The aim of this competition is to fund business led, collaborative research and development (CR&D) projects focused on industrial research. This competition will be for innovative proposals developed between the UK, Japan and the other Eureka participating countries. Innovate UK will be funding the UK partners only. The call for Network projects is open for applications all year round. Access national funding for your international collaborative R&D projects using our simple flexible programme. Your project idea must represent international cooperation in the form of a specific project, directed at researching or developing a product, process or service, and must have a civilian purpose.

 

  1. Upcoming Water4All European Partnership Joint Transnational Call on Water for Circular Economy: https://www.water4all-partnership.eu/news/water4all-partnership-2024-call-pre-announcement-water-circular-economy

The Partnership’s third joint transnational call for research and innovation projects focuses on the general theme of ‘Water for Circular Economy’. The aim of the call is to stimulate research and innovation to improve water security in the long term. The call is planned to be officially launched on 12 September 2024. Research and innovation proposals submitted under the Water4All 2024 Joint Transnational Call are required to address at least one of the following topics: Topic 1: Enhancement of water circularity in industries. Topic 2: Urban water circularity. Topic 3: Resource recovery and valorisation. Topic 4: Economic, environmental and social implications of water reuse and recovered products. The call follows a two-step application procedure, with a closing date for mandatory pre-proposals of 13 November 2024 (15:00 CET).

 

  1. European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis Research Training Fellowship: https://ectrims.eu/fellowships/ectrims-postdoctoral-research-fellowship-exchange-programme/

The ECTRIMS Research Training Fellowship Programme is a one- or two-year research-focused fellowship for young, postdoctoral neuroscientists to undertake training in basic, clinical or applied research related to MS at a host institution in Europe. The overall goal of the programme is to maximise exchange of information between MS research/training institutions and researchers and to help grow the pool of well-trained research scientists focused on problems in MS. The annual fellowship stipend is €55,000 for one or two years. Deadline 01 December 2024.

 

  1. European Research Council (ERC) 2025 call deadlines adopted

The European Research Council (ERC) is the European Commission’s leading funding organisation for supporting bottom-up, investigator-driven frontier research. This approach to research funding ensures that support is aimed primarily at new and promising opportunities, with a greater degree of flexibility. Research funded by the ERC is expected to lead to advances at the frontiers of knowledge and to set a clear and inspirational target for frontier research across Europe. The ERC has published the preliminary opening and deadline dates for its calls to be released for the 2025 cycle of applications:

  • Starting Grants – For promising early career researchers with 2 to 7 years’ experience after PhD: Opening 10 July 2024, closing 15 October 2024
  • Consolidator Grants – For excellent researchers with 7 to 12 years’ experience after PhD: Opening 26 September 2024, closing 14 January 2025 
  • Synergy Grants – For groups of two to four PIs to address ambitious research questions requiring coordinated work: Opening 11 July 2024, closing 6 November 2024
  • Proof-of-Concept Grants – For previous and current ERC grantees who want to explore the commercial or societal potential of their work. Opening 13 November 2024, closing 13 March 2025 and 18 September 2025

  1. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions calls:
  • MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN): Doctoral Networks support doctoral programmes, by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs, and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond. These doctoral programmes will respond to well-identified needs in various research and innovation areas, expose the researchers to the academic and non-academic sectors, and offer research training, as well as transferable skills and competences relevant for innovation and long-term employability. The 2024 Doctoral Networks call will have a budget of €608.6 million. The call will open on 29 May 2024 and close on 27 November 2024.
  • MSCA Staff Exchange: Staff Exchanges fund short-term international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities at all stages of the innovation chain. Secondments must be between different countries and should lead to knowledge transfer between participating organisations. The 2024 Staff Exchanges call will have a budget of €99.5 million. The call will open on 19 September 2024 and close on 5 February 2025.

 

  1. COST Action Open Call 2024: https://www.cost.eu/funding/open-call-a-simple-one-step-application-process/

COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

 

Official development assistance (ODA) related funding

 

  1. NIHR Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) Initiative: https://www.nihr.ac.uk/documents/research-on-interventions-for-global-health-transformation-call-8-stage-1-guidance-for-applicants/36246

The Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) programme forms part of NIHR’s Global Health Research programme and funds cutting-edge interdisciplinary applied health research in key areas in LMICs where a strategic and targeted investment can result in a transformative impact. The eighth RIGHT call is specifically supporting targeted interdisciplinary applied health research to develop and evaluate interventions to strengthen and improve prevention, management and response to unintentional injuries and accidents arising from any cause in ODA-eligible countries. There is a particular interest in interventions relevant to unintentional injuries and accidents occurring in relation to climate change and natural hazards. Awards of between £1 million and £5 million for three to five years are available. Deadline for registration and remit enquiries is 09 October 2024 with application deadline 23 October 2024.

The Darwin Initiative is a UK government grants scheme that helps conserve biodiversity and support the communities that live alongside it through locally led projects worldwide. It is entirely Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded, and therefore projects must promote the economic development and welfare of eligible countries as a primary objective. Darwin Initiative is expected to be mostly focused on Low Income and Lower Middle-Income countries, and at least 70% of funding will be allocated to these countries, however Upper Middle-Income countries (UMICs) are eligible. It’s ‘Main’ scheme is now closed for this round but the following remain open: Extra – Project with scaling pathway (£800k-5M, 2-5 years, deadline 16 September 2024); Innovation – Testing novel approach for potential scaleup (£10k-200k, 1-2 years, deadline 21 October 2024); Capacity – Developing Capability of local and national organisations (£50k-200k, 1-2 years, deadline 21 October 2024).

 

  1. British Academy ODA Global Innovation Fellowships 2024: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/funding/oda-global-innovation-fellowships-2024/

The objective of the ODA (Official Development Assistance) Global Innovation Fellowships is to provide opportunities to UK-based early- and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions. Awards are for up to £150,000 for 12 months, with application deadline 6 November 2024.

 

  1. British Academy ODA Global Innovation Fellowships: South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA)

The British Academy call ODA Global Innovation Fellowships: South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is supported under the UK Government’s International Science Partnerships Fund. The £337 million International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) is designed to enable potential and foster prosperity. Fellowship award holders will embed themselves in a South Africa office (Johannesburg or Cape Town) of the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA). SAIIA is an independent public policy think tank advancing a well-governed, peaceful, economically sustainable and globally engaged Africa. Their work spans foreign policy, governance, the environment, economic policy and social development. The fellowships are worth up to £150,000 at 80% full economic costing (fEC) over 12 months. One or two awards will be given. Deadline 27 November 2024.

 

General international

 

  1. NEW: Pure Ocean Challenges Call

Through the Pure Ocean Challenges Call for Projects, ambitious and innovative research projects are supported that protect biodiversity and marine ecosystems. For the 2024/25 call, special attention will be given to projects: • Developing marine conservation initiatives managed by local communities and indigenous peoples. • Exploring nature-based solutions for the preservation of blue carbon ecosystems. • Operating in key oceanic areas of the French littoral, Middle East/Asia and Africa coasts. Funding of up to €80,000 is available for up to two years. Phase 1 deadline is 01 October 2024.

 

  1. NEW: São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration (SPRINT): https://fapesp.br/en/sprint/call22024

The São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration (SPRINT) programme is designed to encourage and promote the advancement of scientific research through the engagement of researchers affiliated with research institutions in the State of São Paulo with researcher partners abroad. The Principal Investigator must be working on a research project funded by FAPESP. FAPESP will match funding of up to $10,000 per year per project for a duration of up to 24 months. Funding may be used to cover the costs of travel (air tickets), health insurance and living allowances for researchers. Researcher exchange, visits for planning research, international workshops and initial data collection activities will be funded under the grant. Deadline 28 October 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Gastrointestinal Manifestations of Cystic Fibrosis: https://www.cff.org/researchers/gastrointestinal-manifestations-cf-basic-science-projects

Funding of up to $450,000 ($150,000 per year, for up to three years – plus 12% for indirect costs) is available to researchers based at academic and research institutions in the US and overseas proposing basic science research projects that investigate GI manifestations associated with CF. Deadline 5 December 2024.

 

  1. NEW: The Academy of Medical Sciences: Networking Grants: https://acmedsci.ac.uk/networking-grants

The awards provide up to £25,000 over one year to support collaborations between researchers in other countries and the UK, and to hold networking events aimed at strengthening global research capacity. Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

  1. NEW: Newcastle University (NU)-Nvidia Joint Lab: NVIDIA Academia Research Grant in Generative AI and Large Language Models + Simulation and Modelling: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/industries/higher-education-research/academic-grant-program/

The NVIDIA Academic Grant Program advances academic research by providing world-class computing access and resources to researchers.

 

  1. UKRI International partnership: Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (UK-USA, or tri with China or Israel): https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/international-partnership-ecology-and-evolution-of-infectious-diseases/

Apply for funding for internationally collaborative projects to understand the ecological, evolutionary and social drivers of infectious disease transmission in animals, humans and plants, using a quantitative or mathematical approach combined with qualitative principles. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for funding from UKRI or Defra and collaborate with a partner from the USA. You can also have partners from China and Israel to form tri or quadrilateral collaborations. The full economic cost of your project can be up to £1 million, funding available for up to four years.   1. British Academy: Global Professorships 2024: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/funding/global-professorships/

The British Academy’s Global Professorships are large investigator-led awards to attract internationally recognised established scholars to work in the United Kingdom, to undertake new, coherent and cutting-edge research projects. With the Global Professorships, the Academy is looking to support researchers that are proposing ambitious, beyond the state-of-the-art research that breaks new ground. Deadline 23 October 2024.

 

  1. BBSRC-NSF/BIO lead agency 2024: Work with US researchers: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/work-with-us-researchers-bbsrc-nsf-bio-lead-agency-2024/

Collaborate with US researchers on a single joint proposal in the following areas: biological informatics, understanding host-microbe interactions, synthetic cells and cellular systems, synthetic microbial communities. The full economic cost of your project, including the UK and US components, can be up to £2 million. The duration of your project should aim to be between three to four years and must not exceed five years. Stage one intention to submit deadline is 31 October 2024.

The British Academy’s Visiting Fellowships programme provides outstanding academics based in any country overseas with the opportunity to be based at a UK higher education or other research institution. The programme is open to academics at any career stage, and in any discipline within the humanities and social sciences. Up to £40k available for 3 to 6 months, deadline 23 October 2024.

Apply for funding to work with Canada-based researchers to mobilise, examine and synthesise humanities and social sciences research on the topic of envisioning governance systems that work. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for ESRC or AHRC funding. Funding is available for one-year projects.
