Emotional Labour “Bring a Thing ” Workshop
HCA’s Labour and Society Research Group seeks to bring together colleagues, PGRs and ECRs from across disciplines at Newcastle whose research and interests engage with the complex relationships between feelings and work.
Our first meeting – an informal ‘bring a thing’ workshop – will take place on Tuesday 12th November between 10am – 1pm in Armstrong Building, 2.49.
The ‘bring a thing’ workshop aims to foster conversations and make interdisciplinary connections between researchers working broadly on related themes to emotional labour.
Attendees are asked to bring an item (e.g. object, image etc) that they feel represents their research or interests in emotional labour, and to speak informally to the group about their research for a few minutes.
Attendees across all career stages and disciplines are welcome.
The workshop will explore the affective, material and embodied dimensions of labour, and
themes might include (but will not be limited to):
- Paid/unpaid labour
- Management and organisational histories
- Precarity and unemployment
- Hope and labour
- Caring/uncaring in labour
- Affinities and affect in conceptualising (labour) experiences
- Critical reappraisal of the concepts of ‘emotional labour’ and emotion work
- Methodological approaches for the study of emotional labour
- Time and space in emotional labour
- Emotional intelligence and labour
This workshop will offer space to discuss ideas and methods relating to research about emotional labour. Subsequent activities will aim to facilitate discussions that explore approaches to teaching (including cross-school teaching), and the potential for new research collaborations.
