Abstract:
This study investigates how the presence of large firms in a regional industry influences new firm creation. In particular, it examines how technological regimes moderate the relationship between large-firm share and new firm creation across regional industries. It proposes a theoretical framework that integrates the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship (KSTE) with technological regimes. It finds empirical evidence supporting the framework by analyzing a combined dataset of regions and industries in the Korean manufacturing sector. The results show that the large-firm share in a regional industry positively affects entrepreneurship, as measured by the startup rate. This finding highlights the role of large firms in generating and accumulating local knowledge that stimulates regional entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the study reveals that two dimensions of technological regimes moderate this relationship in distinct ways: technological opportunity weakens the positive effect of large firms on new firm formation, whereas innovation appropriability strengthens it.
