Celebrating Success – Dr Sara Maioli

Congratulation to Dr Sara Maioli on her recent interview with Radio 4.

Sara discussed a recent report (published 26th February) in which the government forecasts a contraction of the North East economy by 10.5%. Sara explains that she is not surprised by this prediction as the North East regional economy has benefited greatly by being part of the EU. The UK has been a highly favoured FDI destination by investors outside of the EU (see Nissan in Sunderland) and given the regulatory environment and how easy it is to conduct business within the UK (and our region in particular), they have been used as a platform for exports towards the rest of the EU.

Sara also briefly discussed the increase in Digital Cultural Media and Sport sector, which sees the NE as the second fastest growing region outside London, and which shows that despite the past de-industrialisation of the North East economy, there are signs of dynamic sectors growing within the North East.
