Do you need to park on campus? It is nearly time to make your application for a new virtual parking permit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As our campus continues to open-up, more colleagues will be\u00a0needed\u00a0on site to provide support and meet our business needs.\u00a0So, we have been considering how to make our car parking arrangements workable for this next phase and for the longer term.<\/p>\n

Recognising\u00a0that\u00a0as more people return to campus\u00a0the demand for parking will likely outstrip availability, and to help us to manage this,\u00a0we will soon be reintroducing parking permits and tariffs for cars and other motor vehicles to park on campus.<\/p>\n

As you know,\u00a0we\u00a0implemented\u00a0changes to campus car parking\u00a0during\u00a0the pandemic\u00a0that\u00a0included the suspension of reserved parking and parking charges for all colleagues.\u00a0In\u00a0April, to help increase availability of parking spaces,\u00a0we introduced measures against cars parking on campus without permits and\/or parking in non-designated spaces. The next stage is to introduce the new\u00a0virtual\u00a0permit system that was delayed last year due to the pandemic and to make changes to the allocation of parking bays for different University requirements.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n

New parking arrangements<\/p>\n

This will begin with the introduction of a new standard ‘right-to-seek’ permit for most parking bays on campus, and increased availability of standard and accessible parking bays across our estate. The new\u00a0virtual\u00a0permit will cost \u00a310 per year, reduced from the previous charge of \u00a350 and for the first time will be extended to motorcycles and mopeds.\u00a0This permit will give the right to seek and park in\u00a0a\u00a0standard parking bay in specified campus car parks, excluding reserved, visitor and accessible bays.<\/p>\n

Parking tariffs will also be reintroduced for cars and similar vehicles with options for both hourly and daily rates, with the latter working out cheaper across a full working day and the former more suitable for a shorter stay. The tariff has been set at \u00a31 per hour\u00a0up to a maximum of\u00a0\u00a36 for the day,\u00a0this\u00a0remains\u00a0below equivalent tariffs for local public car parks in the city centre.\u00a0As part of the new arrangements, a map and listing of parking bays will be\u00a0available\u00a0so permit holders can be clear before they travel where standard spaces are located.<\/p>\n

We hope that by doing this, we will make access to parking on campus fairer for all.<\/p>\n

The income from\u00a0campus\u00a0parking tariffs will be used in part to support investment in future improvements to\u00a0all areas of University travel and transport including,\u00a0parking infrastructure,\u00a0active travel facilities\u00a0and public transport incentives.<\/p>\n

When to expect changes<\/p>\n

These changes are due\u00a0to\u00a0begin\u00a0rolling out in August,\u00a0beginning with\u00a0applications\u00a0for\u00a0and issuing\u00a0of\u00a0standard\u00a0permits, with\u00a0the payment of parking tariffs\u00a0expected\u00a0to begin\u00a01st\u00a0September.\u00a0All details of\u00a0the new virtual permit system and parking locations included in this scheme are available on a new section of the\u00a0Travel & Commuting\u00a0NUConnect\u00a0site<\/a>.
