{"id":12652,"date":"2021-11-19T16:38:53","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T16:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.ncl.ac.uk\/nubsstaffblog\/?p=12652"},"modified":"2021-11-19T16:38:53","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T16:38:53","slug":"internal-call-nerc-funding-to-support-discipline-hopping-for-environmental-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.ncl.ac.uk\/nubsstaffblog\/2021\/11\/19\/internal-call-nerc-funding-to-support-discipline-hopping-for-environmental-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Internal Call: NERC funding to support Discipline Hopping for Environmental Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has offered a grant of \u00a375,000 to Newcastle University (<strong>subject to confirmation<\/strong>) to fund activities <u>by 31 March 2022<\/u> at the latest that will support academics and researchers within our organisation to build expertise and agility to work across disciplinary boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Example (but not exclusive) activities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Embedding researchers, for a period of time, in departments outside of their own discipline area.<\/li>\n<li>Sharing insights on priorities and looking for synergies\/ new ideas that cut across departmental boundaries.<\/li>\n<li>Work shadowing in other departments, for example to learn new skills and techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Organising meetings\/ seminars\/ workshops between departments and disciplines to share learning, understanding of key terms, concepts, language and tools to tackle problems.<\/li>\n<li>Working with end users (e.g. businesses, policymakers, non-governmental organisations) to understand how their needs could be addressed through interdisciplinary approaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Call for Expressions of Interest <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We invite Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for funding to support discipline-hopping activities that will help address environmental challenges (see attached <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/r\/hub\/nubs\/Documents\/Research\/Communities%20%26%20Events%20Support\/Blog%20items\/NERC%20Discipline%20Hopping%20Fund_Call%20document_2021.pdf?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=Pkyoqq\">PDF call document for more details<\/a><\/strong>). The outcome on which EOIs to fund will be made by an internal Discipline Hopping Fund (DHF) committee, a diverse, multidisciplinary, and cross-University group that have all completed unconscious bias training.<\/p>\n<p>We expect to make awards in the range of \u00a320,000\u2212\u00a340,000 (full economic cost), but are open to receiving EOIs outside this range if clear reasoning.<\/p>\n<p>Given the tight timescale, the deadline for emailing the short EOI form (see attached <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/r\/hub\/nubs\/Documents\/Research\/Communities%20%26%20Events%20Support\/Blog%20items\/Expression%20of%20Interest%20form_NERC%20Discipline%20Hopping%20Fund.docx?d=w9ea02b95be914d03b556e90c427254ed&amp;csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=5TzhOF\">Word document<\/a><\/strong>) to Jarlath McKenna &lt;<a href=\"mailto:jarlath.mckenna@newcastle.ac.uk\">jarlath.mckenna@newcastle.ac.uk<\/a>&gt; is <strong>5pm on 6<sup>th<\/sup> December 2021<\/strong>.
