The call is open to\u00a0<strong>ESRC-funded researchers<\/strong> at any stage in their career. ESRC IAA funded researchers are eligible to apply. Researchers may re-run events that they have previously delivered for other festivals. With cutting edge exhibitors, hands-on science, talks, shows and workshops, people of all ages and backgrounds can explore the surprising, the entertaining, and inspiring in a way which is fun accessible whilst being rich in the latest discoveries and advances of real scientists, engineers and researchers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>When is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0February 2022 for most events (face to face and virtual), with a schools\u2019 programme running 7<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 19<sup>th<\/sup> Feb 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What format is the festival in?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2022 festival will be hybrid, with a virtual events platform as well as in-person events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where will in-person events take place?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The physical event being held predominantly at <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dcea.org.uk%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CGoda.Valaisaite%40newcastle.ac.uk%7C5da5d6a9f72e4be1c9f808d9d10e6b9a%7C9c5012c9b61644c2a91766814fbe3e87%7C1%7C0%7C637770682123654538%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&amp;sdata=OxIbnfYrB%2BPk6wu6QVw1AkTXFW6zL%2BtNZHA1aVFW91w%3D&amp;reserved=0\">The Deanery<\/a> school in Swindon. \u201cThis school is the newest in Swindon and boasts some lovely auditorium space that we can use and, in addition, we are looking at some prime spots within the town centre as an extension of the exhibition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a festival theme?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe broad overarching theme is \u2018<em>sharing knowledge and innovation to shape our choices in a changing world<\/em>\u2019. Underneath that, we are loosely programming under the following themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Space for All<\/li>\n<li>Living better, longer ( medicine &amp; health \/ food &amp; nutrition \/ wellbeing )<\/li>\n<li>Future Realities ( AI\/ digital innovation\/ gaming\/ transport)<\/li>\n<li>Tomorrow Makers \u2013 showcasing innovation, especially locally businesses \/ early career researchers<\/li>\n<li>Nature &amp; Climate Change\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Who can participate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UKRI are looking for ESRC-funded researchers at any stage in their career. They do ask that they \u201care reasonably well-versed in public engagement events\u201d, but are happy to have an initial chat with them to gauge this if there\u2019s someone who is interested but unsure if they meet this requirement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the benefits to researchers of participating?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UKRI team comment: \u201cGenerally, benefits to researchers are the opportunity to talk to a broad range of people about their work, to gain insights from audiences they might not have considered before, to hone their presentation and public engagement skills, and to act as a role model for their field and UKRI.\u201d They\u2019ve sent a report from the 2021 festival which has some stats on reach and audiences \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/r\/hub\/nubs\/Documents\/Research\/Communities%20%26%20Events%20Support\/Blog%20items\/Festival%20of%20Tomorrow%20highlights%20report%2023.02.21.pdf?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=dXo7cc\">attached<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can researchers run a schools\u2019 event for any year group, 1\u201313?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe feedback from our schools steering group was that for the primary school age children, they generally were much more engaged with trained professional science communicators who could deliver a show.\u00a0 The secondary school pupils got much more value from having the chance to hear from a\u00a0real researcher and\u00a0be able to ask questions. So, we&#8217;d probably recommend that researchers might find it better to concentrate on the\u00a0secondary school audience for schools events. We are happy to chat through any ideas people may have though!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will schools\u2019 events all be face-to-face and in the Swindon area? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, the schools programme will be <strong>100% virtual<\/strong> again this year. This is in response to the feedback from the schools themselves, who really welcomed the virtual format &amp; the opportunity to involve far more pupils than they would otherwise normally be able to do so.\u00a0 The participating schools will mainly be in the Swindon area, with a handful from the wider Wiltshire area (as we work closely with the White Horse Federation schools trust, who are keen to involve all their schools).\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please see below the details of an open call for researchers to participate in the hybrid &#8216;Festival of Tomorrow&#8217; in February 2022.
