{"id":13438,"date":"2022-03-23T08:00:11","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T08:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.ncl.ac.uk\/nubsstaffblog\/?p=13438"},"modified":"2022-03-22T13:47:22","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T13:47:22","slug":"wellbeing-wednesday-easter-support-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.ncl.ac.uk\/nubsstaffblog\/2022\/03\/23\/wellbeing-wednesday-easter-support-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellbeing Wednesday &#8211; Easter Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Wellbeing Wednesday<\/h3>\n<p>Welcome to this edition of the Business School Wellbeing Wednesday Update.\u00a0 We hope you are safe and well.<\/p>\n<p>Each Wednesday (during term time) we will post a staff blog highlighting wellbeing support that is available to Business School students within the School and from across the university to allow staff to pass on the information to students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Wellbeing Support for Business School Students<\/h3>\n<p>The Business School has dedicated health and wellbeing support for our students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lisa Kirton- Counsellor\/ Therapist<\/li>\n<li>Emer McConnell- Mental Health Adviser<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They are available to provide support for students all year round.\u00a0 They can be contacted via\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:NUBS.Wellbeing@newcastle.ac.uk\">NUBS.Wellbeing@newcastle.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Each Wednesday (during term time) we will send you an email highlighting wellbeing support that is available to Business School students within the School and from across the university. As well as providing a reminder about the support available each week, we will also shine a spotlight on a different university support service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get in touch:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you want an informal chat with our wellbeing team, please email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:NUBS.Wellbeing@newcastle.ac.uk\">NUBS.Wellbeing@newcastle.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0and they will be able to sign post you to what support is available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Sources of Support:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Our Student and Staff Wellbeing Service work with local and national organisations to support you and help you maximise your academic potential and gain the most from your time here at Newcastle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Support Plans<\/strong>: If you disclose a long-term mental health condition, supported by recent medical evidence, you may be able to access reasonable adjustments and support to help you engage in your studies. Students who have an on-going mental health condition or disability can access a Student Support Plan:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:specialistlearning@ncl.ac.uk\">specialistlearning@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:disabilityadvisor@ncl.ac.uk\">disabilityadvisor@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental Health Advisor:<\/strong>\u00a0If you feel you may require support with a mental health issue, you can request an individual assessment appointment:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mentalhealthadvisor@ncl.ac.uk\">mentalhealthadvisor@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drop-In Support:<\/strong>\u00a0Drop-in slots are one off appointments if you are wanting to discuss a particular issue.\u00a0 These are for situations where you do not need a regular appointment but may want to speak to someone about an issue impacting upon your health and wellbeing please contact:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sws.therapyappointments@ncl.ac.uk\">sws.therapyappointments@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This service allows you to meet with our Therapist, Lisa to discuss any issue that may be affecting you but where you don\u2019t feel you need a more regular appointment and some advice may help. Lisa can provide counselling for students who may be struggling with life concerns which cause unmanageable emotional or psychological distress. She can also help students to get the most from their university experience and maximise their academic success by providing time focussed counselling. This service is available to all students, to those with and without medical evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wellbeing Workshops<\/strong>: The School is hosting Workshops on a range of topics from Managing Stress and Anxiety to How to Sleep:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/newseventsandprojects\/workshops\/\">Wellbeing Workshops \u2013 Student and Staff Wellbeing \u2013 Newcastle University (ncl.ac.uk)<\/a>\u00a0For more information about wellbeing support and services at Newcastle University visit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/\">https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urgent Wellbeing Support:<\/strong>\u00a0For urgent concerns during office hours (09:00 \u2013 17:00 Monday-Friday) please use the Wellbeing Consultancy service:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:wellbeingconsultancy@ncl.ac.uk\">wellbeingconsultancy@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>. For out of hours help, please call University Security: 0191 208 6817 (24 hours a day, seven days a week)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Report + Support:<\/strong>\u00a0We are committed to providing a positive experience for our students and colleagues and believe that abusive behaviours are never acceptable. Our online Report and Support tool enables anyone to report concerns anonymously, make a formal complaint and\/ or receive support. You can read more at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reportandsupport.ncl.ac.uk\/\">https:\/\/reportandsupport.ncl.ac.uk\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>As Wellbeing encompasses both physical and mental wellbeing we also wanted to highlight some of the measures in place to protect your physical health when you are on campus in the Business School. These help us to keep the campus tidy and make it easier for facilities staff to clean:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Please do not eat in lecture theatres<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Please ensure that you are recycling waste correctly and using the correct bins, especially not putting food waste into the bins in toilets<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Please ensure that you wear a face covering when moving around the Business School to protect yourself and others<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Spotlight on\u2026Easter Support<\/h3>\n<p>This week we are highlighting the support available to you over the Easter break.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Health and wellbeing support<\/h3>\n<p>Campus can seem quiet over the Easter break, but support is still available should you need it. To find out more about the support available, please visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/\">https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NUSU also offer support via the Welfare and Support Centre. The Welfare and Support Centre is a space for you to access support, resources, and information you might need to support your wellbeing, welfare and safety whilst you study. Please visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nusu.co.uk\/support\/welfare\/\">https:\/\/www.nusu.co.uk\/support\/welfare\/<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Digital wellbeing services<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newcastleuni.silvercloudhealth.com\/signup\/\"><strong>Silvercloud<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Silvecloud is a suite of online CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) programmes, which can be tailored to a student\u2019s specific needs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/talkcampus-247support\/\"><strong>iNCLude App<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 the iNCLude self-help app is designed to help you take small steps to improve and maintain your wellbeing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Academic Skills Kit (ASK)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/academic-skills-kit\/\">ASK<\/a> is a central university resources available to all students. ASK has advice on developing your academic skills and information about where you can go for support.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As well as practical tools like how to reference, assessments and exams, there is a range of advice including support for time management, notetaking and the transition to university. Support is available via services including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/academic-skills-kit\/where-to-go-for-support\/maths-aid\/\">Maths Aid<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/academic-skills-kit\/where-to-go-for-support\/writing-development-centre\/\">Writing Development Centre<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/academic-skills-kit\/where-to-go-for-support\/language-resource-centre\/\">Language Resource Centre<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Volunteering Opportunities<\/h3>\n<p>Please see below for a glimpse of some of the volunteering opportunities available to get involved in over the Easter break.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Back to School project<\/strong> \u2013 could you go back to your former secondary school to deliver a talk about your journey to university and student experience? The Back to School project is a great opportunity to share your experience, develop your public speaking skills and positively influence school pupils. If you are interested, please email: <a href=\"mailto:volunteerpw4.union@ncl.ac.uk\">union@ncl.ac.uk<\/a> and visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nusu.co.uk\/volunteering\/details\/714\/\">https:\/\/www.nusu.co.uk\/volunteering\/details\/714\/<\/a> for further information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are also lots of opportunities to volunteer with external providers:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Take part in some micro-volunteering to take a break from revision, relax and do something good for the community!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Post Pals<\/strong> &#8211; you can write cards, letters and emails to sick children and their siblings for the UK charity, Post Pals. For more information, please click<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wiggly bags<\/strong> \u2013 help to make wiggly bags, small hand-stitched fabric bags used by children with Hickman Lines (a central venous catheter used for the administration of chemotherapy and other medications).
