This event will feature an engaging panel discussion with experts in the field, followed by an interactive workshop designed to help participants explore and identify new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where and when<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wednesday 27th November 2024\u00a0from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM<\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fthecorenewcastle.co.uk%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CAlison.Brown%40newcastle.ac.uk%7Cd653f7bce22b41c46b5108dcfdaffbf1%7C9c5012c9b61644c2a91766814fbe3e87%7C1%7C0%7C638664179488331057%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=tDoVVXNRmt7ENRrlW0zyHHORynBy63hTIpavPmr3IRU%3D&amp;reserved=0\">The Core<\/a><\/u>, Newcastle Helix<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the event<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With sustainable futures\u00a0core\u00a0to the priorities of\u00a0the University\u2019s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account\u00a0and a tremendous volume of research already underway in this area across the\u00a0institution, the aim of this session is\u00a0to\u00a0help colleagues understand\u00a0the wide range of\u00a0Social Science-based\u00a0research opportunities available to them.<\/p>\n<p>Recognising that the drive to decarbonise is often viewed as an engineering\/technology challenge, this session will emphasise the critical role that\u00a0the\u00a0Social Sciences and\u00a0related\u00a0HaSS disciplines can play in understanding, contributing to and facilitating progress towards the net-zero goal of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. By focusing on\u00a0the\u00a0social,\u00a0the\u00a0cultural and\u00a0the\u00a0economic, the\u00a0session will help\u00a0researchers\u00a0recognise how their\u00a0work\u00a0can help\u00a0drive\u00a0meaningful change and highlight the role\u00a0Social\u00a0Science research\u00a0can\u00a0play\u00a0in shaping\u00a0comprehensive and collaborative action\u00a0aimed at delivering\u00a0a low-carbon future.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with a panel discussion that introduces core projects and frames questions at the heart of the net-zero challenge, the session will move to a series of facilitated workshops aimed at stimulating discussion, connecting colleagues, setting out next steps and laying the foundations for new projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aims:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To help colleagues working in and collaborating with ESRC disciplines understand the range of research opportunities open to them in this domain to further their work on the social, cultural and economic aspects of the net-zero agenda.<\/li>\n<li>To show how\u00a0funding from Newcastle\u2019s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/hass\/research\/impact-acceleration-account\">https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/hass\/research\/impact-acceleration-account<\/a><\/u>) can progress and accelerate these research agendas by catalysing impact projects (that could be funded by the IAA).<\/li>\n<li>To forge new links and connections across HASS, SAgE and other disciplines.<\/li>\n<li>To provide a steer for further activities\/events in this domain (perhaps involving external partners\/or more focused work streams).<\/li>\n<li>Build the awareness, teams and capacity needed to apply for larger-scale grants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thematic areas will include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decarbonisation<\/li>\n<li>Supply chains and green business models<\/li>\n<li>Data and life-cycle analysis<\/li>\n<li>Governance and policy<\/li>\n<li>Energy networks<\/li>\n<li>Carbon accounting<\/li>\n<li>Transportation<\/li>\n<li>The built environment<\/li>\n<li>Actors, enabling policies and removing barriers for climate action<\/li>\n<li>Physical geography and net zero<\/li>\n<li>Adaptation and the green transition<\/li>\n<li>Urban\/rural\/coastal\/community<\/li>\n<li>Just transitions and energy justice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Workshop schedule:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.00 \u2013 1.30:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Arrival and welcome<\/p>\n<p>1.30 &#8211;
