1. NEW:\u00a0Report Highlights Pathways for Energy and Mobility Transitions in the EU<\/b>:\u00a0https:\/\/www.ukro.ac.uk\/news\/report-highlights-pathways-for-energy-and-mobility-transitions-in-the-eu\/<\/a><\/p>\n

An independent report titled Addressing European Research and Innovation Challenges for System Transitions in Energy and Mobility was recently released, offering expert recommendations for advancing clean energy and mobility in the context of European research and innovation (R&I). The report envisions future systems in line with the EU\u2019s social, economic and environmental objectives, including becoming climate-neutral by 2050.<\/p>\n

2. European Research Council (ERC) announces the results of the 2024 call for Synergy Grants:<\/b>\u00a0https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/erc-2024-synergy-grants-results<\/a><\/p>\n

ERC Synergy Grants address ambitious research questions that can only be answered by the coordinated work of a small group of two to four principal Investigators (PIs). This will facilitate the bringing together of complementary skills, knowledge and resources in new and unconventional ways, with the aims to promote substantial advances at the frontiers of knowledge, cross-fertilise scientific fields, and encourage new productive lines of enquiry and new methods and techniques. Awards may be made up to a maximum of \u20ac10 million for a period of six years, with an additional \u20ac4 million available to cover start-up costs for moving abroad, major equipment, access to large facilities, and fieldwork costs. Applications may be made in any field of research, and proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries, pioneering ideas that address new and emerging fields and applications that introduce unconventional, innovative approaches are particularly encouraged. A total of 548 proposals were submitted in the 2024 round of funding, of which 57 were selected for funding, receiving a share of \u20ac571 million.<\/p>\n

Many congratulations to Prof Tracy Palmer<\/b>\u00a0of Newcastle University who, together with colleagues in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, has received one of the awards for their project \u201cCentral roles of mycobacterial type VII secretion systems in intra- and inter-kingdom warfare\u201d.<\/p>\n

3. DEADLINE TODAY:<\/b>\u00a0Consultation on Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for Cultural Heritage:\u00a0<\/b>https:\/\/www.heritageresearch-hub.eu\/arche-project-launches-broad-consultation-on-strategic-research-innovation-agenda-for-cultural-heritage\/<\/a><\/p>\n

The consultation for the future SRIA is being carried out until 15 November through a\u00a0questionnaire available on the EUsurvey platform<\/a>, in which the whole cultural heritage research and innovation community is invited to participate, as well members from other research and innovation communities, such as climate.<\/p>\n

6. NEW:<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>British Academy Horizon Europe Pump Priming Funding:<\/b>\u00a0https:\/\/www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk\/funding\/Horizon-Europe-Pump-Priming-Collaboration-between-UK-and-EU-Partners\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Principal Investigators (PIs) at universities and research institutions can apply for a grant of up to \u00a310,000 to help them in their preparations for submitting a Horizon Europe proposal for\u00a0Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe \u2013 Global Challenges and\u00a0European Industrial Competitiveness<\/b>.\u00a0The ambition is to support the effective uptake of the opportunities provided by the UK’s association to Horizon Europe. The purpose is not to implement the proposed projects that will be submitted to Horizon Europe, but to give the UK-based partners the resources needed to collaborate with EU organisations and stakeholders to further develop the idea and the market opportunities. The expectation is that the funding will be utilised in a variety of ways but could include feasibility studies, application advice and training, partnership building, and dedicated resource to take forward an application. Proposals are welcome in all disciplines, including engineering, natural sciences, medical and health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The British Academy is holding a series of webinars providing further information about the opportunity and details of how to apply. Applicants can\u00a0register to attend<\/a>\u00a0the webinars online, which will be held on the following dates: 19 November 2024, 14:00-15:00; 8 January 2025, 14:00-15:00; 5 February 2025, 14:00-15:00. 7. NEW:<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>UUKi UK \u2013 France Science, Innovation, and Technology mobility scheme:<\/b>\u00a0https:\/\/www.universitiesuk.ac.uk\/topics\/international\/uk-france-science-innovation-and-0<\/a><\/p>\n

Following the bilateral research dialogue between France and UK which took place in London on 29 February 2024, the UK government has committed \u00a3400k funding to boost and foster UK-France research collaboration. We are delighted to announce that following the launch of our pump-priming scheme last month, we have now launched the call for the second strand, a mobility programme.\u00a0A total funding pot of \u00a3300k is available for mobility activities of UK researchers to institutions in France, with the aim of developing collaborative activity between the UK and France which supports both institutional and UK-wide research and innovation priorities and prepares a submission to a Horizon Europe or other international collaborative funding bid. Mobilities are expected to take place between April 2025 and January 2026. Deadline\u00a012 January 2025<\/b>. 8. NEW:<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>UUKi UK \u2013 France Science, Innovation, and Technology pump-priming scheme:<\/b>\u00a0https:\/\/www.universitiesuk.ac.uk\/topics\/international\/uk-france-science-innovation-and<\/a><\/p>\n

UUKi is currently administering a pump priming scheme (awards up to \u00a310k) to support UK institutions with their engagement with their French research partner in preparing a submission to a Horizon Europe bid.
