The UK has launched a new advertising campaign and a series of roadshows to convince its researchers to join Horizon Europe projects. The goal is to repair links with the continent damaged in the post-Brexit years when the UK was outside the research programme. Peter Kyle, the country\u2019s science and technology secretary, was in Brussels on January 29 to meet three new European commissioners, including Ekaterina Zaharieva, who is responsible for start-ups, research and innovation.\u00a0\u201cWe stand our best chance of tackling the great challenges of our era, from climate change to public health, to growing economies that work for everyone, by bringing the brightest minds from across the UK and the European Union together,\u201d Kyle said in a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0yesterday.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The European Commission is about to open a \u20ac1 billion funding round for defence research and development projects under the European Defence Fund (EDF). The round spans seven thematic priorities, including space, air and naval combat, as well as energy resilience and the environmental transition. This year\u2019s top priority is ground combat, which will get a \u20ac192 million allocation. Thematic calls will target technology for counter-battery capabilities, future modular multifunctional land platforms, land collaborative combat and drone-based mass munitions.<\/p>\n

The analysis based on the survey on the use of patents by ERC grantees, launched in November 2023, examined the technology transfer activities of ERC-funded researchers, including the licensing and other uses of patents resulting from their projects. Of the more than 12 000 researchers holding ERC grants at the time, the analysis focused on those who had declared patent applications stemming from their ERC-funded research. The survey was sent to 655 Principal Investigators (PIs), who collectively reported around 1\u00a0500 patent applications in their projects.<\/p>\n

The British Academy, in collaboration with the Association of ERC Grantees (AERG), hosted a half-day conference on 22nd<\/sup>\u00a0January 2025. The event brought together researchers, academics, and stakeholders to explore key topics in European research within the Humanities and Social Sciences. Recordings of the event, including the keynote lecture, remain available for those who could not attend in real time. The event\u2019s success underscores the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in addressing challenges and opportunities in European Humanities and Social Sciences research. 6. NEW:\u00a0InnoNext programme open to ERC-funded teams\u00a0<\/b>https:\/\/innonext-project.eu\/en\/<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

InnoNext\u00a0is a\u00a0flagship initiative of EIC\u00a0that bridges the gap between academic research and industry by enabling researchers to gain hands-on experience, explore new research questions, and contribute to Europe\u2019s innovation ecosystem. PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers\u00a0in\u00a0ERC-funded teams\u00a0can benefit from the initiative by applying for a 3-month,\u00a0fully funded\u00a0internship programme that connects them with startups and SMEs across Europe. Participants can apply their research to real-world challenges, develop entrepreneurial and management skills, and expand their professional network<\/p>\n

9. The full topic descriptions for the Clean Aviation third call for proposals has now been published although there is a caveat that these have not yet been formally approved and so there may be some changes yet to come. There is\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>380m to be allocated across 10 different Topics. Each Topic is a competition with a scope, budget, etc and consortia compete with each other for that Topic.<\/p>\n

There is an Information Day planned for the call on 4th March which will be online only.\u00a0Registration opened<\/a><\/p>\n

10. NEW:\u00a0Horizon Europe Cluster 5: Climate, Energy and Mobility Work Programme for 2025 and Information Day 6th<\/sup>\u00a0May<\/b><\/p>\n

There will be an Information Day on 6th May, in Brussels and online. This will be immediately followed (i.e. same day) by an in-person only Brokerage Event to support consortium building. It is likely that this will be held in the European Commission Charlemagne. Further detail to follow<\/p>\n

11.<\/b>\u00a0NEW:<\/b>\u00a0EIT: Water call for proposals and briefing\u00a0<\/b>https:\/\/eit.europa.eu\/library\/eit-call-proposals-2025-new-kic-water-marine-and-maritime-sectors-and-ecosystems-eit-water<\/a><\/p>\n

The European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT) has launched a call for proposals for an EIT Knowledge and Innovation Community (EIT KIC) to build a new sustainable innovation partnership to strengthen Europe\u2019<\/span>s water, marine and maritime sectors and ecosystems. The call for proposals invites consortia of organisations and industry leaders bringing together water-related education, research and business to put forward their vision and strategy for EIT Water. The Horizon Europe UK National Contact Point for the EIT, Ben Morris, will be delivering a briefing on this initiative on 14th February at 1030-1130. No need to register, just mark the time and date in your diaries and\u00a0click on this link to join at the time<\/a><\/p>\n

12. Getting those Grants: Quiet Time for Writing \u2013 New Dates Available!<\/b><\/p>\n

Colleagues are invited to attend a series of research funding proposal writing sessions.\u00a0 These sessions are designed to give you quiet time and space to work on your research funding proposal.\u00a0 The time will be largely for you to write quietly.
