1. REMINDER:\u00a0IMPORTANT: Pre-publication of Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025:\u00a0<\/b>https:\/\/www.ukro.ac.uk\/news\/pre-publication-of-horizon-europe-work-programme-2025\/<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The Horizon Europe Work Programmes 2025 have been pre-published, subject to being adopted and endorsed by the European Commission. These work programmes list the call topics to be launched in the near future including the funding opportunities for EU consortia across all six clusters (Health, Culture, Security, Digital\/Industry, Climate\/Energy\/Mobility, Food\/Agriculture\/Bioeconomy) and the EU missions (Climate change, Cancer, Oceans\/Water, Cities, Soil\u200b). Please browse the work programmes for opportunities of relevance to you and start engaging with you EU contacts\/networks.\u00a0Please note we have a\u00a0NU Horizon Europe Travel Fund<\/a>\u00a0to support Newcastle staff travel (before the end of July) to engage with partners for these calls.<\/i><\/p>\n

2. NEW:\u00a0ERC to offer larger, longer ‘Super Grants’:\u00a0<\/b>https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/choose-europe-science-erc-welcomes-new-budget-super-grants<\/a><\/p>\n

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that the European Research Council (ERC) will receive additional funding to develop a new funding instrument larger and of longer duration than those currently offered. Details of the format and criteria of the new instrument are being developed, but President von der Leyen confirmed that the grant would last for seven years and maintain the ERC’s focus on scientific excellence as the sole criterion for selection.<\/p>\n

3. NEW:\u00a0Trump halts new NIH grants to international health-research partners<\/b>:\u00a0https:\/\/www.ukro.ac.uk\/news\/ambassadors-for-the-erc-network-launched\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Stepping up its America-first campaign, the Trump administration has started to cut funding for medical-research projects that involve foreign labs.\u00a0On May 2, the White House published a summary of its\u00a02026 budget plans<\/a>, including a 40% cut in NIH spending, and a 55% cut in the National Science Foundation (NSF) budget. On the same day, the NSF\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0it is copying a policy rolled out last month at NIH: cutting how much American universities can charge for lab space and other \u201cindirect\u201d costs of research.<\/p>\n

4. NEW:\u00a0<\/b>Key updates of the Horizon Europe 2025 Work Programme:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>https:\/\/www.zabala.eu\/opinions\/horizon-europe-2025\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

A major development in the 2025 Work Programme is the\u00a0launch of eight new European Partnerships<\/b>\u00a0in key areas for Europe\u2019s strategic autonomy and industrial strength: Brain Health, Forests and Forestry, Raw Materials for the Green and Digital Transition, Resilient Cultural Heritage, Innovative Materials, Photovoltaic Solar Energy, Future Textiles, and Virtual Worlds. These partnerships aim to consolidate research efforts at national and European levels and deepen industry participation in Horizon Europe.<\/p>\n

5. NEW:\u00a0EPSRC implement lead agency agreement with Germany:<\/b>\u00a0https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/who-we-are\/epsrc\/relationships\/international-agreements\/lead-agency-agreement-with-germany\/<\/a><\/p>\n

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has a partnership with the German research foundation Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) to encourage and support applications that involve international collaborative teams through a lead agency agreement. This lead agency agreement has recently been extended to be open to all themes within the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), through the\u00a0EPSRC working with overseas scientists<\/a>\u00a0funding opportunity, which is part of the EPSRC applicant-led funding route.<\/p>\n
