Work on the Responsible Use of Research Metrics forms part of the\u00a0Research Integrity Project<\/a>, one of the Top Priority Projects of the wider\u00a0Research Culture Programme<\/a>. To support this, and to help colleagues understand how metrics should and shouldn’t be used, we have launched new self\u2011study e\u2011learning which is now available on the Learning Management System here:<\/p>\n

Learning Management System \u2013 Responsible Use of Research Metrics e-learning<\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The training is designed for anyone interested in how research is measured, as well as colleagues involved in recruitment, reward and recognition, grant applications, or any process where metrics may be used.<\/p>\n

The LMS provides guidance on which sections are recommended for different roles, including Academics, Professional Services, Technicians, and Early Career Researchers.\u00a0All sections should be completed by colleagues involved in REF preparations and decision-making.<\/b><\/p>\n

As set out in the University’s\u00a0Research Excellence Framework 2029 Code of Practice<\/a>,\u00a0this training is required for all colleagues involved in REF preparations and decision-making processes<\/b>. Decisions about when \u2013 and when not \u2013 to use metrics form an important part of our approach to the REF. We are clear that we want to cultivate a research culture that recognises diverse contributions and assesses quality on the basis of the research’s own intrinsic merits.<\/p>\n

Alongside the training, colleagues can get involved in the\u00a0Responsible Use of Research Metrics Special Interest Group (RUoRM SIG)<\/a>. The SIG brings colleagues together to share best practice and shape how the University uses research metrics. It also contributes to strategic work, including the institutional statement and related implementation plan, as well as the development of resources.
