5 Early Arrivals Week Events You Need To Experience

The start of term is nearly here and our excitement levels are dangerously high. If you live locally or are planning to arrive early, you might be wondering how you’ll fill your time in Newcastle until Freshers’ Week starts on Sunday 25 September… Don’t worry! We have a lot of activities planned for you to help you settle in and find new friends.

Early Arrivals Week starts on Monday 19 September and if you’re around, you’re welcome. From touring the city to mingling with other students, there are plenty of events that you won’t want to miss. Here are our top 5:

Meet and Mingle

We know how it feels to make a completely fresh start in a new city – exciting and daunting at the same time! However you’re feeling, our Meet and Mingle event gives you the opportunity to relax and meet other new students. Ask your questions to current staff and students, play some ping pong and make new friends.

Tuesday 20 September, 6pm – 8pm

It’s all happening at Mens Bar in the NUSU Building. The best part: it’s free and there’s no need to sign up. Just turn up on the day!

International Buffet

Fancy making some new friends over dinner? What if that dinner included a range of cuisines from around the world? What if it was free? Join us for a trip to Za Za Bazaar for a taste of food from India, China, America, Japan and beyond. There’ll be some live cooking too! What do you say? (We say YES!)

Wednesday 21 September, 6pm

Meet at Mens Bar in NUSU to walk to the restaurant (which takes about 10 mins). It’s ‘first come, first served’ so make sure you don’t miss out!

Newcastle Essentials Walking Tour

If the title doesn’t give it away, we’ll be guiding you around the city and showing you where to find all the essentials you need for settling in your new home! This is a great chance to get to know your way around the city. What are you waiting for?

Wednesday 21 – Friday 23 September, 11am and 3pm

Look for the signs outside NUSU front entrance. No need to sign up for this one.

Quiz Night

If you’re keen to discover more about British culture – or to show off your knowledge – why not come to this event? You will be arranged into teams to answer questions about Newcastle, Britain and more. This is your opportunity to shine and win prizes (or just to have fun and collect some more friends)!

Friday 23 September, 7pm – 10pm

The Venue (in the NUSU building). No sign up required!

Whitby Bus Trip

We’ll take you to visit Whitby, a beautiful seaside town in North Yorkshire. You’ll have the chance to see some of the most beautiful coastline of the North East of England. What could be better than ending a great week by sightseeing with friends, playing on the beach and enjoying another British tradition – fish and chips!

Saturday 24 September, 10am – 6pm

It’s £10 per student and only limited spaces are available so be sure to book online!

So there you have it: something to keep you entertained every day before Freshers’ Week starts. Please don’t forget to bring your student card or student number will you to events. Can’t wait to see you there!
