Packing for uni can be a difficult task. You’ve probably read the endlessly long guides on the internet about what to pack. I’ve skipped the obvious items and opted for 5 essentials I think every fresher needs to survive first year!
Not an exciting item but very practical. University rooms have limited plug sockets which can be a bit of a nightmare when you want to charge or use several electrical items simultaneously.
Several of these will come in very handy for storing meals cooked in bulk or leftovers. Portions of pasta are notoriously difficult to judge, so expect leftovers!
*Top Tip*: Bring a small box that fits in your bag for packed lunches for busy days on campus.
Family photos, your favourite poster, a wall hanging or fairy lights – whatever it be, bring something to add a bit of personality to your room and make it that bit more homelier.
*Top Tip*: If you opt for fairy lights don’t forget batteries! (They will come in handy for other things too!)
It’s useful to have a small supply of basic medical items as you never know when you might need a plaster or cold and flu relief items to combat freshers flu!
Bringing your phone to uni is a given but make sure you download the Newcastle University App. I use it on a daily basis to check out all sorts: where the nearest available computer is, when my library books are due and when and where my next lecture is! It has a campus map which is a lifesaver to help you navigate around campus.
