The Alternative Packing Guide

A Picture of Harriet

I definitely won’t try to cover an exhaustive list of everything you might need for University. But I thought it might be useful to provide you all with a few slightly unconventional bits and pieces that have proved to be a essential during my time at university.

1. MONEY

Whether you’re working over summer or when you get to Newcastle. Having an extra bit of cash to spend on going out or a Dominos for a night in is always appreciated. It’s important to budget, but I’ve definitely appreciated the importance of treating myself.

2. RUBBER GLOVES

You are about to learn the joys of a shared kitchen. And plugholes…

3. BLENDER

Blenders are really cheap from supermarkets and proved essential for my healthy smoothies (also great for making pancake mix).

4. FAIRY LIGHTS AND POSTERS

For anybody worried about being homesick, take things from your room or buy new things so that your new room feels like yours. You will be part of the university and it’s important to make yourself a home away from home.

5. BLANKETS

Admittedly more of a necessity in second year when you become responsible for heating bills. Appreciate the heat of student halls whilst you can!

6. CLOTHES HORSE

Doing your laundry as a laundrette isn’t cheap. Having a clothes horse definitely saves you a few quid. On that note, maybe a laundry bag as well, you don’t want to be the person that drops a pair of underwear on the stairs!

7. LAPTOP

This is luxury rather than a necessity, but a good laptop means the days of manically scrawling messy notes on crumpled lined paper are over.
