An Animal Lover’s Guide to Newcastle

A Picture of Zoe

For myself and many others, one of the saddest parts about leaving home is the lack of small, fury friends wandering around the house. But not to worry – there’s plenty of places in the Toon where you can get your furry fix!

Jesmond Dene Pets’ Corner

farm-1-1

Located in the beautiful surroundings of Jesmond Dene, Pets’ Corner is a wonderful addition to a leisurely walk in the area. Offering free entry (though donations are welcome), they look after animals of all shapes and sizes, including pigs, goats and sheep, alongside rabbits and various colourful birds.

They’re open 9:30am – 4:30pm, Monday to Sunday, however since it’s all outside I’d recommend either wrapping up warm or visiting in the summer!

Dog and Scone

Not only is Dog and Scone a haven for dog lovers of all ages, but they also serve up a delicious range of cakes, coffees and teas, and are conveniently located in the centre of town.

Entry is £5 for an hour, but includes your first drink; book online for guaranteed entry. Check out their adorable resident pooches between 11am – 7pm Tuesday – Friday, and 10am – 7pm on weekends.

Mog on the Tyne

Conveniently just located next door are Mog on the Tyne, an oasis of calm amid the hustle and bustle of Newcastle’s busy city centre. As Newcastle’s first cat cafe, they boast some of the most gorgeous and friendly moggies – watch out for Stan though, as he WILL try and steal your hot chocolate!

At £5 an hour or £7.50 for two, you may as well go ahead and book the two. They are open 11am-7pm Tuesday – Friday, and 10am – 7pm on Saturday and Sunday. Just remember that they close every day for catnaps between 3 and 4pm!

Catpawcino

If one cat cafe just isn’t enough, you’ll be delighted to know that there’s another just 10 minutes away! Head down to the Quayside and you’ll find Catpawcino, a relaxing, garden themed cat cafe.

Similarly priced at £5 an hour, advance booking is recommended to guarantee some time with their lovely kitties. Open 11am – 7pm Tuesday – Friday, and 10am – 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Blue Reef Aquarium

blue-reef-1

Slightly further afield (but walkable from the nearest Metro station), Blue Reef Aquarium is definitely worth the trip. Filled with tonnes of different types of fish, and even some otters and monkeys, it’s a day out that any animal lover will adore.

Book online for the cheapest tickets, and visit between 10am – 4pm Monday to Friday or 10am – 5pm on weekends. Don’t forget to check out the feeding and show times, and visit the beach whilst you’re there!

Ouseburn Farm

farm-2-1

Similar to Jesmond Dene’s Pets’ Corner in that they too offer free entry, Ouseburn farm is host to a whole range of animals including pigs, cows, goats and guinea pigs to name just a few!

Located in the heart of the Ouseburn Valley, the farm is easily walkable from the city centre. Visit between 9:30am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday and between 10:30am – 4:30pm on weekends to get your dose of cuteness.
