Newcastle has some of the most varied and tasty lunch options around. Choosing can be difficult, so we’ve put together a guide to some of our favourites. Read on for some of the very best deals, all within a short hop of campus…
Some of their food combinations can seem slightly odd (Sunday dinner veg in katsu sauce!), but Shijo’s noodle soup is the best in town. Although it might not seem like a bargain at £5.50 a go, one giant bowl definitely equals a two person sharing portion, and you can get student discount.
Categorically the cheapest place to get a meal deal: panini, drink, and a bonus portion of chips, all for £1.75! Go prepared – queues can be intense during peak times.
Don’t be fooled by some of the pizza places closer to campus. Head down to Slice in Grainger Market and your voyage will be rewarded with a giant pizza slice for just £1.90.
While you’re at Grainger Market, the next obvious stop is Nan Bei Chinese Dumplings. Any four dumplings for £2.50. Be warned – they can be addictive and four doesn’t always seem like enough…
If you haven’t already had your fill of pizza, you might want to stop by Domino’s in the Students’ Union. There are great student deals to be had – pop in and pick up a voucher!
For tasty Turkish fayre, head to Red Mezze on Leazes Park Road. £7.45 is a bit steep for a lunch deal, you might think. But when you realise that this includes bread, a choice of two mezze starters and a giant main course, you’ll realise it’s actually quite cost effective. No dinner necessary!
Remember: while there are great lunch deals to be had, unfortunately every day can’t be a Domino’s day on a student budget. You’ll also have to accept that sometimes, it might just be best to get yourself to Tesco and do a few variations of the humble homemade sandwich!
