Intra Mural is sport organised, played and competed all within Newcastle University, between students, social groups, degree programmes, halls of residence etc. The sports on offer range from football (11 a side, 7 a side, 5 a side), Rugby Union, Rugby Sevens, Netball, Hockey, Basketball and Futsal. With over 3200 participants last year, Newcastle University Intra Mural competitions are some of the largest in the country.
Unlike with the University teams, students of all abilities are welcome. The leagues and cups are competitive for those who love to win, whilst maintaining a friendly, light-hearted atmosphere for those who just love to play. The teams are founded and maintained by students. This does mean they have the luxury of coming up with a unique and often witty team name. If you are a lover of a cheeky pun then this is your time to shine and get creative. Some of my personal favourites from recent times include: Jesmond Tutu FC, A.C Me Rollin, and Murder on Zidane’s Floor. The sports are great for being social, meeting new people and you have the added bonus of working up a sweat.
The chances are that one of your social groups will have a team competing somewhere. Each hall of residence normally has one or two teams, and most degree societies offer an Intra Mural group so finding a team to join is easy. Or, if you are organised and Mr or Mrs Popular you can pull together a group of friends and start up your own team. The registration process is dead simple, visit the Intra Mural website for all the details.
