July Round Up

From course queries to gaming needs, we really do see it all on our Student Room board.

Here are some of the most common queries we’ve been sent in July.

This is something we see a lot of on The Student Room as naturally a lot of you are concerned about dropping a grade. Luckily, all applicants who narrowly miss the conditions of their offer are reconsidered again when results are published in August.

Whether we are able to accept near miss students also depends on the number of applicants who have met the conditions of their offers, and the number of places we have available on our programmes.

It’s worth noting though that we do give preference to applicants who have picked us as their firm choice.

If you’re looking for part-time work whilst at University, becoming a student ambassador may be the job for you. The role is open to students on any course in any year of their studies, and provides paid opportunities to help out with events on and around campus.

We usually advertise positions around October, with interviews soon after. Successful applicants will be given training and added to student ambassador database; where they will then receive emails of any available job opportunities.

If you’re looking for other job opportunities, be sure to check out the Part-time job fair held on campus in October.

We have some fantastic music facilities on campus. Unfortunately due to insurance reasons practice facilities can only be used by students studying on a music degree. However, there are University orchestras/ensembles which use these rooms who occasionally accept non-Music students.

But if being in an orchestra isn’t for you and you still want to keep in tune with your musical skills. Why not join one of our  music societies?

This can be a common misunderstanding. Undergraduate students do not need to pay anything when applying for our accommodation. Only postgraduate students need to pay a deposit. In fact, undergraduate students do not need to pay any accommodation fees until they arrive. However, if you want to pay your full year’s fees up front, you do receive a discount.

However, if you apply for a Managed Partnership site they may require you to pay some upfront costs at the time of accepting the offer, including a deposit.

If you are still waiting for your accommodation offer, don’t panic! Accommodation places are offered in batches and are dependent on your application:

  • Guaranteed students – between June and end of August;
  • Late applications – approximately Tuesday 1 September
  • Insurance candidates – approximately Wednesday 2 September
  • Clearing candidate – approximately Thursday 3 September
  • Local students not firm choice – as soon after 3 September as rooms are available

You can find out more about the allocation process on our  Accommodation Service’s website.
