After the big family roasts and the puddings, a post-Christmas crash might leave you wondering if you’ve put on a few pounds. New Year’s Day comes around and it’s time to get going with your resolutions.
If, like me, you find it difficult to motivate yourself, why not join a society and try your hand at something new for the New Year? When it comes to societies Newcastle Uni has lots to offer…
Yoga Society at Newcastle University isn’t just about flexibility. Yoga helps mental wellbeing, increases fitness levels and can help with injuries. There are a variety of different classes running six days a week at very reasonable prices. Yoga has always been a great option for me, so join in with us!
Aerial Yoga on Sundays is always lots of fun!
Give back in the New Year and join RAG. RAG is a society that’s all about charity. With regular fundraisers, trips, fancy dress and the famous RAG week coming up at the end of January, this society is always looking for more people to get involved. Check them out on Facebook to see more of what goes on during RAG Week.
RAG Fashion Show last year raised £3,000 alone!
For me, the New Year is the perfect time to start a new diet. Have you ever thought of kicking meat and becoming a veggie? It has lots of health benefits, as well as being ethical, which the Vegetarian & Vegan Society seek to raise awareness for. Get a taste before you sign up and enjoy great discounts during Vegan Restaurant Week this January!
Struggling to get past the couch to 5k? Join the club. The Running Club that is! Meeting on Mondays and Thursdays, Running Club offers you the chance to run with a group and stay motivated in the New Year.
Don’t fancy running? Then go for a walk. The Fellwalking Society host walks every weekend, ranging from difficult ascents to easy valley rambles. They’re hitting lots of spots around the UK this year. They even have a Semester 2 only membership which is sure to make you stick to a New Year’s regime and shed some extra pounds.
The Fellwalking Society are heading to Snowdonia this year!
Join in on the charity Bike Ride in March 2018 from Whitehaven to Tynemouth. Training towards this goal with Coast to Coast is a fantastic way to get fit in the New Year.
If you’ve got a 2018 bucket list but you don’t know where to start, the 20 Minute Society is perfect for you. I’ve heard it’s lots of fun if you’re feeling spontaneous. The idea is that you receive a location by text and you must get to it within 20 minutes. Get there in time and you could be enjoying anything from Durham day-trips to Extreme Trampolining, or even jetting off on a mystery holiday!
Check out the NUSU Societies Page for more information about the range of extra-curricular fun you could be having during your time at Newcastle Uni.
Missed your chance to browse at last year’s Freshers’ Fair? Then join us for the Refreshers Fair 2018 this Tuesday 6th February, 11am-4pm in Venue!
