Student Room January Roundup

UCAS deadline day has been and gone and now it’s decision time… which university is the one for you?

To give you a helping hand with that all important decision, here’s a round up of our most frequently asked questions on The Student Room this month.

Hi, is human geography a popular course ? I got rejected as my BBC predicted didn't meet the requirement but say if I got the grades n wanted to apply through clearing, is there a likely or slim chance that I'll be accepted with tuition/student loan and accommodation guaranteed ?

Yes, our Geography degrees are very popular. There are usually places available in Clearing due to people not taking up their offers etc so it’s definitely worth looking into. If you achieve ABB or above you stand a very good chance of being offered a place.

Last year there was an Accommodation Guarantee for students entering Newcastle University through Clearing. We don’t know if that will be offered for 2017 entry, but Accommodation Services will do their best to find you a room in University accommodation – they’ll definitely make sure you have somewhere to sleep when you get here!  And don’t worry getting a place through Clearing doesn’t affect your eligibility for student finance.

Pharmacology Course

Hi, I've received all my ucas offers and have firmed Newcastle to do Pharmacology and was wondering how many applicants are usually in the pharmacology course, whats the timetable usually like, how much time is spent in lectures or in labs and which accommodation would be closest to the school of biomedical science for pharmacology? (-sorry if the message seems to be a mess.)

Each year 15-20 students apply directly to the B210 Pharmacology course.  We allow any of our students to change degree specialism once they have completed their first year and so we normally see the Pharmacology programme numbers increase to 35 students after this. You can have a look at a sample timetable within our Student Room forum.

Castle Leazes, Park Terrace, Kensington Terrace, Leazes Parade are the closest to the Faculty of Medical Sciences however you can view all of the Accommodation sites on the University website

88 1 week ago Report post Hi, a friend of mine also has an offer through Partners and obviously there's an assessed summer school, but if they were to meet the grades that are for standard entry and totally mess up on the summer school would it be possible to still get the place on the course?

If a PARTNERS Student fails the Assessed Summer School, they would run the risk of losing their place. This is due to the fact that successful completion of the Summer School forms part of the formal offer through UCAS. If a PARTNERS student fails the Summer School, yet meets (or exceeds) their predicted A-level grades, they will be given extra consideration and may still be offered a place on their course, however this isn’t guaranteed as they have not met all of the conditions of their offer.

Is it possible to receive an offer from the course you have applied before the PARTNERS offer?

If you apply via our PARTNERS scheme your eligibility will be assessed first, and then your UCAS form is passed to the selector for the course(s) you want to do. If you’re accepted onto PARTNERS then that should be in the conditions of your offer.
