Thinking About Careers

A Picture of Louis

Being at University isn’t just about studying. Thinking about what you’re going to do after your studies is an important part of University life and, if you’re like me, it can be quite scary!

With a leading Careers Service, Newcastle University takes a lot of the fear away. They help with finding work experience, part-time jobs and lots of other exciting stuff to help you get your dream job.

Vacancies

Newcastle University have their own Vacancies Online page. If you’re looking for what’s available to you in the world of work, this should be your first stop. This was my first stop when looking for a new position. It can seem daunting at first but I visited a careers drop-in session and they explained the whole system to me.

You can even find temporary work if you’re not looking to commit to anything long-term. A few of my friends have found part-time jobs through this page. The roles are offered through the University, so you know there’s going to be a good selection of top employers.

Internships

As part of their commitment to getting us a great role when we graduate, Newcastle University offers an internship program that can be completed part-time during term time.

This is the role that I wanted, I knew that if I got one of these I could really feel confident about getting a graduate role. I started applying and, after a few rejections, I finally got one. The team in the Careers Service were really helpful, they trained me up for interviews, gave feedback and helped me every step of the way.

When I finally got my position I felt like I had really earned it!

I’m confident that after completing this internship, finding a graduate role will be easier. The Careers Service can help you in all the ways they helped me.

The Careers Service can also help you with other things…

Placement Year

One of the greatest things you can do when you’re at University is take a placement year. A year in the industry puts you in a great position for when you graduate. It can also give you a well-needed break from studying for three years.

Starting Your Own Business

Don’t want to work for anyone when you graduate? Have an idea for a business? Newcastle University can help you with your idea. From start to finish they’ll offer you guidance and support with their STARTUP programme. Take a look at these STARTUP success stories to get inspired.
